Mission Statement

We are partners on a faith journey, called to be the church, Christ's voice, hands and heart to continue His mission in Mill Woods, Edmonton and throughout the world. As part of the United Church of Canada, we strive to reach out to our own community and beyond, growing and changing, but always as doers of the Word, not just hearers. While affirming our faith in Christ, we share global human concerns with people of other faiths.

We undertake, with all Christians, the ministry of fostering and caring for all God's people and creation. The nurturing and Christian Education of all children and adults is an important part of our ministry, as it was in Christ's.

We welcome all people to become part of our family, sharing in warm worship, meaningful fellowship and communion.

                                                                                              (Official Board, November 8, 1988)

Our Core Values

We value:

  • Faith based spiritual growth
  • A Caring community that is supportive and inclusive
  • Trust and integrity
  • Courage to risk, to seek, to move on
  • Commitment to purpose, to mission, to ministry carried out by all
  • Joy and laughter
  • Acceptance of all individuals
  • Acceptance of diversity

Our Vision

Empowered by Christ's Spirit, building on our unique gifts, we are a congregation committed to providing opportunities for individuals and families to grow by providing diverse experiences of worship and spiritual nurture to reach beyond ourselves to care for others in our community and share the Good News of God's love. The Board meets the second Tuesday of each month (except July) at the church. They examine issues affecting the congregation as a church family and the congregation's role as an active member of the United Church of Canada in Edmonton and beyond.

Other  Committees that are just as important to the life and work of Mill Woods United Church but that do not have Board positions include:

  1. Children & Youth Ministries - oversees programming of all activities and groups for children and youth including the provision of a Sunday school experience for youth ranging from three years to high school age.
  2. Congregational Life - acts as the scheduling and recruiting body for the ongoing and upcoming events of church life.
  3. Mission and Outreach - makes the congregation aware of issues of concern in community at large.
  4. Pastoral Care - maintains regular pastoral care within the congregation and responds with appropriate help when families or individuals are in crisis.
  5. Property - maintains church property.

We operate on two different calendaar years. One is for our financial year wich runs from January to the end of December. The other is to elect Board Members and it runs from May until the end of April. For this reason, we have an Annual Financial Meeting to deal with the budget and stewardship issues in February and another in May to elect a new slate of officers for our Official Board.

From time to time, we may also call a special congregational meeting to inform our members of an issue which must be dealt with immediately or requires congregational approval before we can roceed at the Board level. All of these meetings are open to any one who wishes to be a part of our church family - whether you are a member, adherent or just interested in what is happening in the church.
