First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Betty-Kay Reid. A Memorial Service was held on Monday, April 21, at 2 p.m.

REID, Betty-Kay - Passed away peacefully at age 82 on April 16, 2008, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax, after several years of declining health. Born in San Francisco, Betty-Kay was a daughter of Thomas and Betty Ching, and grew up in Winnipeg, Man. She is survived by her husband, Don; daughter, Lorabeth Ritch and son-in-law Murray Ritch; son, Tim, and very special grandson, Stuart Ritch. She was predeceased by her sister, Lilian, and brother, Tim. Betty-Kay was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and good friend. Wherever she went and whatever she was involved in, Betty-Kay made close and lasting friendships. She particularly enjoyed over 60 years of fellowship in Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She loved her part-time job in the Halifax Citadel office of The Salvation Army, where she worked for 20 years. Betty-Kay was an active golfer and curler, and served as president of the ladies division of both Brightwood Golf Club and Dartmouth Curling Club, as well as president of the board of the Halifax Protestant Orphanage. For many years, Thursday bridge club was a highlight of her week. She loved to be busy, but Betty-Kay was happiest spending time with her family and her friends. They will remember her great sense of style as well as how much fun she was. Betty-Kay's petite stature belied her strong will and spirit. The family wishes to thank the staff at Parkstone for the care they gave Betty-Kay, and for the kindness they always showed to Don. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 20, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 21, in First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford St., Halifax. Because Betty-Kay loved them, flowers will be gladly received, or donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.  You can E-mail your condolences to the family here.

Doris Melissa Colwell - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Doris Melissa Colwell on April 12, 2008, at home after a lengthy illness.  She is mourned as wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, sailing companion, and artist.  Born 1926 in Port Williams, Nova Scotia, she was daughter of Ida and Kempton Lantz.  Following graduation from Acadia University and a period of employment with the Federal government, she accompanied her husband, Garnet, to Montreal and Boston during his medical post graduate training.  While away, Doris began classes in painting and developed her talent in art, especially in the field of china painting.  After returning to Halifax, Doris dedicated her life to raising her family.  She enjoyed her membership at Ashburn Golf Club, painting sessions with friends, travelling with the sailing group, cross country skiing, and a long association with couples and friends who met regularly to play bridge.  She was a member of First Baptist Church, Halifax, where she devoted many years to volunteering in a variety of roles, and she especially enjoyed her time leading the craft group. Doris will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 57 years, Garnet, her son Jim (Becky) of Dartmouth, and daughters Patty (Cyril) of Ottawa, and Cindy (Dwayne) of Lawrence, Kansas.  Doris was the much loved grandmother of Jordan, Trevor, Megan, Brianna, Shannon, Christopher, Danielle, Bryce, Cassidy and Cuyler.  She is survived by her sisters Beulah and Eileen, and was predeceased by her brothers Kenneth and Leon. There will be visitation at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax , on Tuesday April 15, from 2 to 4pm, and from 6 to 8pm.  There will be a celebration of Doris’ life at the First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford Street, Halifax, on Wednesday April 16, at 2pm.  Following the service, there will be a reception at the church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.  Email condolences may be sent to condolences.snow@ns.aliantzinc.ca
