A Memorial Service for the late Lesley Heard was held at First Baptist Church Halifax on Wednesday, February 7th at 2 p.m. We extend our sincere sympathy to Ken and family and to Lesley's many friends.
HEARD (Wayne), Lesley - Surrounded by the deep love of her family,
Lesley Heard passed away on February 4, 2007. Born in Durban, South
Africa, on April 3, 1924, Lesley was the fourth child of George Hedley
and Laura Kate (Coleman) Wayne. She was predeceased by both parents,
infant brother, Eric; sister Beryl (Rossouw), and brother, Cyril. She
obtained her B.A. and Education degrees from the University of Natal in
South Africa, and went on to teach in South Africa, Ashford County
Grammar School in Middlesex England and later at Clayton Park Junior
High School, where she was involved in syllabus development. In her
younger days Lesley was a noted field hockey player, having twice
represented the province of Natal as well as being ranked nationally.
Lesley's main loves were her family and friends, art, literature and
music, and First Baptist Church, Halifax. She was a passionate advocate
of integrity in both personal and professional life, a passion that she
surely passed on to her many former students. In 1964, spurred by the
morally unacceptable situation in South Africa, Lesley emigrated with
her husband and three children to Canada, where they happily and
gratefully settled. She is grievously missed by her husband of over 61
years, Kenneth "Ken"; her children and their spouses, Cherry and Curtis
Clark, Stephen and Margie, and Andrew and Carolyn, as well as her
grandchildren, Catherine, Anna, Luc, Meagan and Alison, and her nieces
and nephews. Lesley has passed on to her family and friends many
memories of her constant love and devotion. A memorial service will be
held in First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford St., Halifax, on Wednesday,
February 7, at 2 p.m. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer
Society or First Baptist Church, Halifax. On-line condolences may be
made at: www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
