First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Reginald Evans, who died on December 15th at the age of 94. A Funeral Service took place at the Church on Saturday, December 20th at 11 a.m.

EVANS, Reginald Dickey, 94, passed away peacefully at home on December 15, 2008. Born in Sydney, Reg was the son of Ross O. Evans and Iva (Dickey) Evans, and a lifelong resident of Halifax. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1935 with a B. Commerce (Great Distinction Geology, History, Economical), and in 1936 with an M.A. (History). In 1936, he was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia and in 1940 to the N.S. Barristers' Society, and was a Life Member of both. Reg practiced as a Chartered Accountant based in Halifax from 1936 to 1958 and as a Barrister and Solicitor from 1958 to 1986. He was a Director and Officer of a number of Nova Scotia companies and held a major interest in various industrial and investment companies. He was President and CEO of R.D. Evans Investments Limited, and director of the R.B. Cameron Group of companies (including Maritime Steel and Foundries Ltd.), M.W. Graves and Co. Ltd., Seven-Up (Maritimes) Limited, and Deuterium of Canada Limited, among others. For many years, Reg had a very active interest in Scouts Canada. Starting as Treasurer of what was then the Halifax district in 1940, he went on to be the President of the district and, later, President of the Provincial Council of Nova Scotia. In 1960, he was appointed Provincial Commissioner of N.S., in which office he served for five years. He was a member of the National Council Executive for seven years. For his important contribution to Scouting, he was awarded the Silver Wolf in 1968, the highest Canadian Volunteer Scouting award. He continued as an honorary member of Scouts Canada and remained on the Advisory Board of the N.S. council for many years. Reg was a Governor of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design beginning in 1970 and took an active part for 17 years, including Chairman of the Board for four years. Afterwards, he continued his interest as an Honourary Governor of the college. Reg was a member of the Rotary Club of Halifax beginning in 1940, and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow. A lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, he was also a former member of the Halifax Club, Ashburn, Oakfield (serving as it's 3rd President), Saraguay Club, Halifax Curling Club, and a number of others. Reg was an avid gardener up until recent years, and spent a great deal of time enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking and canoeing. Throughout his life, Reg maintained a strong commitment to his family, his friends, and his business relations. His remarkable wisdom allowed Reg to act as a councillor to many, and his ability to face challenges with grace and dignity was a source of inspiration to his family and friends. He traveled the world extensively as a youth, and later with his wife of 64 years, Marjorie Parkes. In addition to Marjorie, Reg is also survived by daughter, Ellen Pilon (Paul); son, Owen (Betty); son, Clyde (Lynne); eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and by his brother, George. Donations in memory may be made to the Reginald Evans Scholarship Fund at NSCAD, or to a charity of one's choice. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, December 19, in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Halifax. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, in First Baptist Church, 1300 Oxford St., Halifax, Rev. John Boyd officiating. Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Halifax.
