In Memory of Sheldon L. Fountain

First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Sheldon L. Fountain whose funeral took place at the Church on Monday, December 11th, at 11 a.m.

Sheldon L. Fountain, age 92, died Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at Halifax. He passed away peacefully while with family members. He was born on Deer Island, N.B., on March 18, 1914, son of Hathaway and Annie Fountain. He graduated from the Provincial Normal School(Teacher’s College), Fredericton, N.B. He then taught, at age 17, for three years on DeerIsland in a one-room school at Chocolate Cove, teaching grades primary through 12. He graduated from Acadia Universitywith a BA in 1939, and then held a teaching Fellowship at Boston University and graduated in 1941 with an MBA, being one of the earliest persons to obtain this degree. He served in the Canadian Army as a Captain in the Directorate of Personnel Selection. He was employed with United Service Corporation in Truro, at Eastern Transport Ltd. and Truro Motors, and in Halifax. He joined the Faculty of Acadia University in 1957, where he established a degree program in Business Administration which became the Fred C. Manning School of Business Administration. He taught there 13 years. He served on the boards of Maritime School of Social Work, King’s-Edgehill School, Acadia Divinity College, Canada Permanent Trust Company. He was a director and senior officer of Great Eastern Corporation and North Eastern Corporation for 47 years. He was active in the Rotary Club in Truro and Wolfville. He was a life member of N.S. Heritage Trust, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, N.S. Joshua Slocum Society. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Halifax, and served as deacon and on many boards. He was awarded honorary doctoral degrees from both Acadia University and Dalhousie University He was a major and well-recognized benefactor of numerous organizations in the areas of health, education and the arts. He was known and loved for his gentle sense of humour, his compassion, his goodwill and charm. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie (Manning) Fountain, Halifax; Fred, Elizabeth, Alexander, Katharine Fountain, Head of St. Margaret’s Bay; Eileen, Olivia, Jonathan Richardson, Halifax; David, Margaret, Gwyneth Fountain, Halifax; sister Avonelle Butler, St. Stephen, N.B. He was predeceased by brothers Gorman, Randolph and Rev. Glenn. Visitation will be held at Snow’s Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax, on Sunday, December 10, from 2 to 4 in the afternoon and from 7 to 9 in the evening. Funeral service to be held at First Baptist Church, Oxford Street, Halifax, on Monday, December 11, at 11:00 am, with interment service at Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Falmouth, at 3 pm. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind or a charity of choice.
