In Memory of Nita Irvine

First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Nita Irvine whose funeral took place in Wolfville United Baptist Church on Thursday, November 21 at 2 p.m.

IRVINE, Nita Maureen - Kentville, Wolfville and Middleton, passed away November 19, 2007, in Evergreen Home for Special Care. Born October 10, 1931, she was the second daughter of Roy and Hazel Boyd of Windsor. Nita had been an educator most of her life and had taught in Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. She was always keenly interested in her students, not only in teaching the course material but in their life experience. Students often sought her advice on many issues and she was always willing to lend an ear. Nita was a member of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and held several positions on the Provincial Executive over the years and served on the National Executive, Canadian Teacher's Federation. She was also interested in social and political issues and was a past president of the Nova Scotia Women's Liberal Commission; past member, National Women's Liberal Commission; past president, Nova Scotia Liberal Party; member, National Executive of the Liberal Party of Canada; and ran as a Liberal Candidate in 1984 in Annapolis East. She had suffered from arthritis since childhood and volunteered many hours to The Arthritis Society and in later years was the chair of the Disabled Persons Commission for Nova Scotia. She was also a devout Christian and served in various capacities in the Baptist Church in Middleton, Halifax (First Baptist) and Wolfville. Nita was predeceased by husband, W. Allan Irvine; sister, Erdena Millet, and parents, Roy and Hazel Boyd. She is survived by her brother, Ritchie Boyd (Mary), Dartmouth; sons, Kevin (Beth), Kentville; Gregory (Susan), Charlottetown; grandsons, Innes, Regis, Adrian, and step-grandson, Jason O'Brien; various nieces and nephews. She was much loved and will be fondly remembered. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place in Serenity Funeral Home & Crematorium, 1212 Parkway Dr., Port Williams, today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 22, at 2 p.m. in Wolfville Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Barry Morrison and Rev. John Boyd officiating, with a reception to follow the service. Donations in Nita's memory may be made to The Arthritis Society.
