First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Phyllis McMahon whose death occured on July 18, 2009.
McMAHON (Collings), Phyllis Gertrude Hume — In loving memory of Phyllis Gertrude Hume McMahon (Collings), who passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII on the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2009, at 89, with her children Fred and Dianne (Kokesh) by her side. She lived fully to her last days. Despite many health problems in her final years, she always took great joy in living and happiness in the simplest things even as her physical capacities declined. Her mind, her humour, her smile, and her pleasure in living remained strong to the end. Her final illness was a brief and courageous fight with cancer. Born in Halifax in 1919, in her parents' home on Edward Street, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude Leota (Hume) Collings and Frederick John Collings. In May 1941 she graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science in Household Economics. In November, 1941, she married John "Jack" Francis Roderick McMahon in Toronto, just before he went overseas with the Canadian tank corps. She was predeceased by Jack, who passed away in 1979, and her brother Donald. Aside from her children, she is survived by her son-in-law, Bill Kokesh, and nieces and nephews Trudy (Collings) Otto, Bill and Fred Collings, Judith (McMahon) Maxwell, and Jacqueline, Julia, James, and John McMahon. She had been an active member of the First Baptist Church since 1930 and also a member of the church's Martha Spragg Missionary Group. She was a member of the Nova Scotia Home Economics Association and several other groups. A memorial service followed by a reception will be held on Tuesday, July 21, at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church Halifax, 1300 Oxford St., Halifax, B3H 3Y8. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Halifax or charity of choice. Funeral arrangements entrusted to J. A. Snow Funeral Home. Condolences for the family visit www. MeM.com.
