First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to Alyce and John Feindel in the death of Alyce's mother, Rosamund (Rose) Rice on November 11, 2009. A memorial service took place on Saturday, November 14 at 2 p.m. in Bridgetown Baptist Church.
RICE, Rosamund Lillian (Rose) 100 years old, life-long resident of Bridgetown, N.S., died peacefully, Wednesday, November 11, 2009, in Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital, Middleton, in the presence of her family.Rose was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Aunt and friend of all who knew her.She was a prominent figure in the Town of Bridgetown and touched the lives of young and old.She was born on May 24, 1909 in Crossburn, Annapolis County, the eldest daughter of Esther and Burpee Ruggles.At an early age, she came to Annapolis County and was educated in the Bridgetown School system.As a young woman and mother, she studied music under Miss Agnes Munro, a prominent Valley music educator.She was a member and soloist of the United Baptist Church for many years and a faithful member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary. Rose’s skills with the needle were well known and endless and she enjoyed many hours of friendship and contentment with her quilting sessions and knitting for the Red Cross.She tackled many things in her lifetime and mastered all.She was an excellent homemaker and cook, a fashionable example of the housewife of the 50’s, 60’s, etc. Rose never held a grudge, never shirked a duty and always was there to help people, especially her family.She belonged to a generation of women who were tough, resourceful and more accepting of their circumstances.Her richest legacy, to her family and friends, and to every one of us whose parents have come to the age of dying, will be the memory of her that we carry in our hearts and our everyday lives.She was a pillar of strength, a joy and inspiration to her family and friends.She lived her life with great faith and a great love of her garden, where she spent many hours, even up to the time of her death.She was able to stay in her home for all her life, with the help of family and her most wonderful gift, her memory.She read the daily newspaper every day from front to back and could reiterate everything.At her 100th celebration of her life, she was honoured with salutations from the Queen, the Governor General, the Prime Minister and all the politicians she loved, including her very favourite, the Honorable Greg Kerr. Rose was predeceased by her husband, Frederick Walden, her sister, Alyce and her brothers Willis, Carl and Michael.She is survived by her son, Frederick (Maggie) Rice, Bridgetown and by her daughter, Alyce (Dr. John) Feindel, Chester, N.S., by nine grandchildren, Steven (Jill) Feindel, Dartmouth, Kevin (Cheryl) Feindel, Mahone Bay, Michael (Carolyn) Feindel, Halifax, Jonathan (Angela) Feindel, Halifax, Suzan (Ralph) Croft, Bridgewater,Timothy (Lisa) Rice, Bridgewater, Douglas (Rachael) Rice, Bear River, Darren (Debbie) Rice, Bridgetown and Scott (Donna) Rice, Bridgetown.22 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren.Her nieces, Louise Kinsman, Bridgetown and Marjorie Williams, Paradise, also survive her and were dear to her heart.As well, several nieces and nephews from Nova Scotia and Ontario are survivors of her extended family. Rose’s family wishes to thank Dr. Paul MacLean and the staff at Soldiers’Memorial Hospital, and all relatives and friends for their love and devotion.Cremation has taken place.There will be no visitation.A memorial service will be heldSaturday, November 14, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at the Bridgetown Baptist Church, Bridgetown, Pastor David Cumby officiating.Donations in memory of Rose may be made to a charity of choice.Family flowers only, please.
