First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Jean Travers whose death occured on Wednesday, September 10, at the age of 98 after a brief illness.
TRAVERS (Cole), Jean - Born August 31, 1910, in Middleton, to the late L.E. and Lillian (Morse) Shaw. Jean grew up in a large and loving family, mainly in Wolfville. She was predeceased by all her siblings, Ron, Greta (Johnson), Lloyd and Leon. After graduating from Acadia University in 1930 and Simmons College in Boston, she worked for the National Research Council in Ottawa. In 1936 she married Allen Cassidy Cole, and later returned to Halifax where Allen became a vice-president with L.E. Shaw Limited. Jean was the most sociable of women with a great gift for making and keeping friends. She was an excellent bridge player, consummate conversationalist and an enthusiastic curler. She loved words - on the page, in crossword puzzles, lexicons, cryptoquotes, or on a Scrabble board. She played the violin in her youth and always enjoyed music. She was fun loving with a mischievous sense of humour. After Allen's death in 1961, Jean worked as secretary to the Clerk of the Nova Scotia legislature, and then social secretary to Lt. Governor and Mrs. H.P. MacKeen. She was active in the I.O.D.E. for many years and she served on the Board of Directors for L.E. Shaw Limited. In 1978 she married Charles Travers and spent 20 happy years with him. Since Chuck's death, she had continued to live in her home in Halifax, visiting her Queensland cottage, enjoying her friends and family and generously encouraging her grandchildren in their careers. Her happiest moments were time spent with family. She was much loved, and will be greatly missed by children, Leon Cole (Jacqui Good) and Lesley Cole (Steve Sears), along with her grandchildren, Allen, Holly, Ted and Austin Cole, Matthew MacLean and Alexa (MacLean) Gauthier. Jean's two great grandchildren, Robert Cole Gauthier and Dashiell Douglas Cole, brought sunshine into her later years. The family would like to thank We Care Home Health Services and their caregivers for their kindness. They enabled Jean to stay in her home for the last years of her life. She has been cremated. There will be a visitation with family in the ground floor reception room of Summer Gardens, 1470 Summer St., Halifax, on Monday, September 22, from 4-7 p.m. She will be interred in Pleasant Hill Cemetery next to her beloved husband, Allen Cole. A memorial service in celebration of Jean's life will be held at a later date. No flowers please. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, First Baptist Church, Halifax, or the charity of your choice. On-line condolences may be sent at: www.mem.com
