First Baptist Church Halifax extends sincere sympathy to the family and friends of the late Shirley Ross whose Memorial Service was held on Thursday, January 25th at 2 p.m. from First Baptist Church Dartmouth.
ROSS, Shirley Eisener - 1929-2007, passed peacefully in her sleep
surrounded by her loving family. Born in "Glenwood", Dartmouth, she was
a daughter of the late Charles and Freda (Baker) Eisener. Shirley was a
graduate of Dartmouth High School and Maritime Business College. She
had a deep love of music and studied piano and then the pipe organ for
a number of years. As a member of Dartmouth United Baptist Church in
her youth, she was actively involved as a church school teacher,
C.G.I.T. and youth leader. After nine years as an office secretary in
Halifax, she returned to studies and graduated from Gordon College of
Theology and Missions in Massachusetts, U.S.A., with a B.Sc. degree in
Christian Education. After serving several years as Director of
Christian Education at West End United Baptist Church, Halifax, Shirley
moved to Saint John, N.B., where she worked in the Christian Education
Department of the Atlantic United Baptist Convention. She married
Preston Ross in Saint John and resided in that city until moving back
to Dartmouth in her senior years. Her keen interest in Christian
Education continued throughout her life, serving at Lancaster United
Baptist Church, Saint John, as a youth leader, teacher, Deacon and
church school superintendent. She worked as church secretary at
Lancaster United Baptist for 14 years and was an interim organist and
choir director at Saint Columba Presbyterian Church and various other
churches in Saint John. Believing all of creation, large and small,
reflects God's love and power, she found expression in her hobbies of
photography, painting, writing, reading and handcrafts. Shirley is
survived by daughter, Nancy (Steve) Lomax, Pickering, Ont.; son, Jim,
Japan; brother, Foster (Dorothy); sister, Marion, Dartmouth;
granddaughters, Nicole, Sarah and Karen Lomax, Pickering, Ont.;
sister-in-law, Betty, Dartmouth; numerous nieces and nephews. She was
predeceased by Preston, her husband of 29 years; brothers, Norman
(Cathelene) and Ralph; and three special family members, Jerry, Kelly
and Jamie Lomax. No visitation by family request. Memorial service will
be held in First United Baptist Church, Ochterloney Street, Dartmouth,
at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 25. Cremation has taken place. Interment
will be in Cedar Hill Extension, Saint John, N.B., at a later date.
