NORTH, Gregory Ian, Q.C. - With great sadness, the family of Gregory Ian North, Q.C., 57, regrets to announce his sudden and untimely death in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, Monday, March 13, 2006. Greg was the eldest son of the late Judge Murray A. and Margaret North and was born in Halifax on June 6, 1948. He attended Acadia University (1969), Queen's University (1970), Dalhousie Law School (1973) and the London School of Economics (1974). Greg began his law career with Cox Downie Nunn and Goodfellow after returning from London. Almost immediately, he began practicing Labour and Employment Law as an advocate and later almost exclusively as an arbitrator. In 2000, he made a decision to begin an arbitration practice from his home which he was doing at the time of his death. Greg served on countless volunteer boards, agencies and tribunals over the years. Most recently, he was serving as the Chair of the HRM Board of Police Commissioners. Greg loved being a lawyer, his relationship with the policing family, but first and foremost Greg loved being a dad. He was so proud of his family. Besides his "bride" of 24 years, Susan (Pineo), he is survived by Amy, Graham, Jacqueline, Daphne, Martha and Colin, at home, as well, Greg is survived by brothers, Alan and David, Halifax; and his aunt, Nance North. Greg will be missed by his puppies, Rudy and Oprah. Those who knew Greg in any capacity know that he possessed a brilliant mind and conducted himself with integrity and class at all times. He was always pleasant and made people feel at ease, even in the most difficult situations. His booming laugh and unfailing sense of humour and fun are legendary. Susan and the family would like to thank the many medical professionals who worked so hard to save him including the EHS Paramedic Team, the Emergency Room Staff and the ICU Unit of the New Halifax Infirmary, your efforts are appreciated by us all. As well, thank you to the many people who have supported us at this difficult time. His family aches at the thought of life without Greg, but we know we were privileged to share our lives with this wonderful father, husband and friend. Family flowers only. Donations in Greg's memory can be made to a charity of choice. On-line condolences can be sent to: snowfh@alderwoods.com.
