St. Anne's Anglican Church (Byron)
A friendly community church

Lay people at St. Anne's are actively involved in the worhsip service in a number of roles. The short list below reflects some of those roles.
  • Chancel Guild (see the ACW web page for details)
  • Servers
  • Lay readers and lay communion assistants
  • Sidespersons

Lay people have an opportunity to proclaim the word of God in our worship service. At both 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. services, readers from the congregation read one of two Bible readings - either Old or New Testament. Young people participate in this ministry by reading at special services and our monthly Family Eucharist service.

Readers' schedules are prepared in advance and a resource person is available to assist them with any difficult words or passages. If you are interested in this ministry, contact the church office for more information.

In the Old Testament, it speaks about the Levites who ministered in the House of the Lord. This is a good job description for Servers. They assist the Officiant with such things as lighting and extinguishing candles, carrying the processional cross, receiving the offering and assisting in preparing the bread and wine for communion.

While most of our Servers are teenagers, there is no age limit! Training is provided.

Lay Communion Assistants have the responsibility of assisting the priest with the administration of either the bread or wine to parishioners wishing to receive Holy Communion. Individuals receive a brief orientation session prior to commencing their duties. Assistants typically serve for a one year period and a schedule is distributed in advance.
The rector is responsible for choosing those who serve in this role.

Participating individuals and couples contribute to the conduct of services by:
  • distributing and collecting books and service bulletins;
  • collecting, counting and documenting offerings and
  • regulating the flow of the congregation during communion services.
and of course... we can't forget that on Shrove Tuesday, the Sidespersons organize a PANCAKE EXPERIENCE to raise money for community organizations.
