Upcoming in December - Make your own Santa Survival Sack with a variety of materials e.g. books, DVDs, CDs for families and caregivers to enjoy during the Christmas season. Items will be due back in early January 2012.

Historical Christian fiction

Paradise Valley – The Daughters of Caleb Bender Book 1 - by Dale Cramer This new series, inspired by actual events, introduces an Amish colony in the Mexican mountains. In 1921, Ohio’s new law forces Caleb Bender’s family to seek sanctuary where the government will not interfere with their Amish way of life or take their children from them. Nor will it protect them from the bandits terrorizing the countryside. This male author says, “my father was raised Old Order Amish, and my mother was a share-cropper’s daughter from southern Georgia. Sometimes I think maybe it’s that bizarre genetic combination that made me a natural storyteller”. Cramer tells his own father’s story in his novel Levi’s Will which is also available in our library.

Non-Fiction
The Hymnwriters Our Unknown Friends – A Biographical Guide to British and American Sacred Song by Whitney J. Dough This collection of over fifty hymnwriters are featured spanning hundreds of years with the unique stories that inspired them. The “favourite hymn of China” and children over the world, Jesus Loves Me was written by the American Anna Warner. Anna and her sister felt a responsibility of the spiritual well-being of the young cadets at the West Point Academy where they conducted a Bible class. Anna died at the age of 95 in 1915.

Early Ontario Gravestones by Carole Hanks Early gravestones are a reminder of the history of Upper Canada. The first ones were crude wooden markers made by a friend or neighbour. The arrival of expert stone-cutters is evident in the photographs illustrating various styles, motifs and epitaphs. This is an interesting information source even for St. Anne’s cemetery.
