The Anglican Community in Lennoxville has been creating Christians since 1822 when the Sherbrooke-Lennoxville Mission was founded. We truly believe that as Christians in today's world we are commissioned to continue that legacy of making disciples who then make more disciples, etc.
In 1844 the mission was divided into separate churches with one in each community.
Rev. Lucius Doolittle was the Lennoxville rector at this time. He had previously opened a grammar school in the building attached to the rectory in 1833. Doolittle was a man whose name did not reflect the great achievements and influence that he had within the Anglican community and educational sphere. His grammar school later became Bishop College's School which is currently a prestigious private high school located across the St. Francis River from Bishop's University. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Bishop's College which later became Bishop's University which continues as a fine institutution with the CEGEP, Champlain College, now located on the same campus.
The actual church of St. George's was consecrated in 1847 with additions over the years to include: In 1896 the curved west wall, the tower and the peal of 8 bells; In 1899, a church hall was built and In 1958 the joining of the parish hall with the church to include the vestry, the office, the choir room and the Upper Room.
The grounds have been improved with an enlarged parking lot and the creation of Bishop Tim's (Matthews) Garden, a peaceful retreat on the back lawn of the church.
