God's Word hope for Kenya: Psalms 119:74
God's Word: Open for All

Mombasa Youth Rally

There were drizzles of rain in the morning. We thought this might jeopardize our expectations of holding yet another great youth rally in Mombasa. God however favored us. Groups of young people started arriving at the Elim Evangelistic Church as the rains subsided. This was on 22nd April 2006.

The theme for the Rally was,” God’s Word, Hope for Kenya” (Ps 119:74).

BSK had held another rally in 2004 at the same venue This time round, we intended that the young people would be challenged to find a living hope from interacting with and applying God’s Word in their lives. Also the youth from different church backgrounds could come together for fellowship with one another and worship the Lord.

The day’s programme started at 10.am with praise and worship session led by youth from PCEA Makupa and Mombasa Pentecostal church.

Afterwards, Thomas Tharao, the Resource Mobilization Manager shared with the Youth what BSK does and what their role is in fulfilling our mission. He mentioned that youth have a stake in BSK seeing that they are potentially tomorrow’s adults who would propel forward the work of BSK.

Speaker

The Speaker of the day was Pastor Samwel Ng’ang’a of Word of Life, Ukunda.

He shared from Hebrews 2:1-3, where he pointed out the main causes of hopelessness among youth as: -

a)      Drifting away from what we know (even after God has spoken to us through His Word)

b)     Backsliding and getting involved in worldliness as a result of influence by the media, music, materialism and negative peer pressure.

c)      Disobedience –2Tim 3:2 where Paul says to Timothy: “People will be disobedient to their parents…”

Reading from Heb 2:3- ff, Pastor Ng’ang’a proposed a cure for this problem as                follows:

i)        We must accept the deity of Jesus Christ. He himself is the Word (John 1:1-2)

ii)       The Word will give deliverance from bondage

iii)     The Word will also give direction for our lives

The speaker admonished the youth to keenly note 3 issues:

a)                  Have a positive attitude for God’s Word

b)                 An appetite for God’s Word

c)                  An aim for reading God’s Word; desiring to be changed by it.

Youth from different churches were able to show case different talents in memory verses recitation, Bible Puzzle, which had competition aspect.

For Bible puzzle, first prizes were bagged by under 16 years category, James Ndebe from Kerugima Baptist and the over 17 years Dolly Vincent from MPC.

The memory verses prizes went to James Ndebe, Cyrus Maina and Maureen Atieno, all from Kerugima Baptist

There were also presentations songs, dances, skits and drama. These presentations went a long way to challenge the youth to live according to God’s Word.

The young people were very excited to take back home loads of awards they received at the rally.

Those who were involved in the programme were George Maganga and Eunice Kanini (Coast Zone), Resource Mobilization Manager and Youth Coordinator.

The turn up was about 150 youth. Many were not able to attend, though invited, due to similar activities in churches at the same time. This was during the holiday season.

We thank God that He allowed us to reach out to young people and touch their lives.

It is our expectation that the Coast Zone office, in conjunction with youth leaders from different churches should be able to organize such events in the future without any problem.
