Multicultural Ministries

...........global outreach comes full circle!

For decades, AL N District churches have sent missionaries overseas to share the gospel.  In the last couple decades, we've come full circle -- with the large cultural groups in our nation reaching themselves and their countries of origin.  The United States remains the fourth largest mission field in the world.  A continuous influx of people from all over the world created this phenomenon.

Approximately 2000 new immigrants and visitors come to the U.S. daily.  Thousands of them come to live here permanently and others stay a few years for business or for further education.  The mission field is right at our doorsteps!

They come in search of a better life.  But we can offer them more than what they came for -- eternal life in Jesus Christ!  The AL N District's goal is to accomplishe that task by mobilizing existing cultural churches and multiplying new congregations.

The AL N District responds to this growing mission challenge through the ministry of the Multicultural Ministries Team.  The MMT is composed of national coordinators of the AL N District.  We are commited to mobilize and multiply churches among 21 diverse multicultural groups in North Alabama with which our 68 churches have established ministries.

Ministry focus:

  • Planning and implementing the MMT vision of multiplying and mobilizing cultural churches on the AL N District.
  • Empowering and resourcing ALND multicultural ministers.
  • Rallying ALND churches to expand outreach to 21 intercultural groups in North Alabama.
  • Recruiting, training, and preparing the  next generation of ALND leaders, pastors and church planters.
  • Assisting ALND cultural churches for effective ministries in communities God called them to serve.

ALND Intercultural Ministry Opportunities

  • Prayer network for Hispanic ministry expansion initiatives.
  • Prayer and financial partnership with the ALND Multicultural Ministries Team (MMT)
  • Church planting in cooperation with the district and our local churches.

MULTICULTURAL MINISTRIES LOGO

Multi-Cultural

Alabama North District Churches of the Nazarene are uniquely called and positioned to be  a district of churches for all people.  We have churches in  urban mission areas with growing ethnic diversity.  In spite of language and cultural barriers, our passion is to see people from every generaiton, ethnicity and background worshiping, serving and having meaningful relationships together in one one district!  Our weekly worship services increasingly reflect the ehnic diversity found in our communitites.

Ethnic Ministries serves as a bridge into corporate life of our church and district.  We also have fellowship groups that intentionally target specific language groups and ethnicities.  The purpose in these gatherings is to create a friendly and safe environment where spiritual seekers can learn about Jesus and the life He came to give, as well as giving Christ followers an opportunity to worship and connect in their own language and culture.  These groups then seek to help each person become comfortable with and integrated into the larger, diverse congregations.

As a result, first generation immigrants find the help theyneed in the smaller ethnic groups, while the 2nd and 3rd generation young person can also fit in to the broader activities of the church and ALND cultures.

Mission Statement:

Multi-cultural Ministries is committed to helping the district become a racially just, culturally diverse, spiritually vibrant and growing district of churchs in the denomination,  US and Canada, that gives expression to the richness of its faith, heritage and experiences. It is a ministry that embraces the challenge of including all Nazarenes as partners in ministry at all levels of its district and corporate structure."

Nazarenes Call for Compassionate Response

The US  Immigration Task Force under the advisement of the USA National Board Christian  Action Committee has endorsed the World  Relief Statement in Support of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The Task  Force is an adhoc group that was formed to study ways in which we, as a  denomination could respond to the crisis in pending US immigration legislation.

World Relief,  as an extension of the National Association of Evangelicals, works with, for,  and from the Church to relieve human suffering, poverty and hunger worldwide in  the name of Jesus Christ.

With the current debate on  US immigration policy, World Relief is actively advocating for comprehensive  immigration reform at the federal level, cooperating with other faith-based  agencies, and working to engage the Evangelical community. Comprehensive  immigration reform is advocated for as a non-partisan issue, in which  evangelical Christians are being called to engage based upon Scripture and our  moral values.

Racial & Ethnic Populations

The United States has become increasingly diverse in the last century.  According to the 2000 U.S. Census, approximately 30 percent of the population currently belongs to a racial or ethnic minority group. The  Census Bureau projects that by the year 2100, non-Hispanic whites will make up only 40 percent of the U.S. population.

The Office of Minority Health (OMH) is charged with improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations [American Indian & Alaska Native (AI/AN), Asian American, black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, and Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI)], and with reducing health disparities among Americans of all racial and ethnic  backgrounds. Click on the links for more information about each of these groups.

Though health indicators such as life expectancy and infant mortality have improved for most Americans, minorities experience a disproportionate burden of preventable disease, death, and disability compared with non-minorities. These trends compel the public health community to examine issues of health disparity among the various racial and ethnic groups that comprise the country's population.

Multiracial Americans are those people who belong to two or more of the federally designated racial categories.1  According to the 2000 U.S. Census, approximately 6.8 million Americans -- 2.4 percent of the total U.S. population -- self-identify with two or more racial categories the Census Bureau has not made any projections about the rate of growth of Multiracial Americans in the coming decades.  The highest concentrations of Multiracial Americans live in Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Washington.2

Census 2000 was the first U.S. census which allowed individuals to self-identify with more than one racial and ethnic category.  It is very difficult to make generalizations about which health conditions are most prevalent among Multiracial Americans, as there is little research about this group.  In the coming years, as more data is collected, a clearer picture of the health status of Multiracial Americans will emerge
