Good things are happening that would not be possible without Safe Space! Piñatas and pumpkins!
These past weeks at Safe Space the children have been working on building pumpkin piñatas by hand--a very messy process but satisfying. They are also learning to respect and use the sewing machine through a bean bag project, a pumpkin hat project and a carry bag project. Boys and girls alike are trying these projects and, Thanks be to God !, a very kind neighbor, Melinda Flores, is our instructor on Tuesdays. Mrs. Flores and her family were the first neighbors to attend the official opening of the success Center in 2002. Since then her sons , Angel and Abraham, have come to the center to work on their assignments whenever they needed to. They have supported our work and now are more actively involved. Another neighbor, Suzy Ortiz is leading the bilingual Read and Grow project which will soon be expanded to Mary's Mercy Table. Suzy is also working to expand the GED program in San Bernardino to include instruction in other languages to further the stated goal of the Adult Education department. Beryl Craig faithfully continues to do double duty as game leader and tutor on Wednesdays. In this coming year we will rely more and more on volunteers because our funding resources are being reduced by the financial crisis looming over us all. I am asking right here and now that next time you go out to eat, donate the same amount of money to Safe space or your favorite non-profit so that necessary services can be continued here in San Bernardino.
In everything give thanks.
