HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SPEAKING CONGREGATION

The Berkeley Chinese Baptist Church began in 1953 as a combination prayer meeting and Bible study. In 1956, the group of about 20 people began meeting on Sundays. During this time, they applied to the Southern Baptist Convention to become a participating church. The application was accepted and the Chinese Mission, as the group was called, was now a participating member of the SBC.

In 1964, the Chinese Mission was meeting every Sunday in Berkeley. The Chinese Mission agreed that they wanted to minister to Chinese speaking individuals in Berkeley. One year later, the Chinese Mission became the Berkeley Chinese Baptist Church.

Through the years, our ministry and congregation expanded beyond the Chinese-speaking members to those of the American Born Chinese. In 1990, a second pastor was added to the staff to support the expanded American Born Chinese ministry.

The English speaking congregation now ministers to 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation Chinese and is expanding the ministry to minister to a multi-cultural community. We fully expect that God will change our congregation to become a multi-cultural church that can minister to everyone in the community that God has placed us in.
