The A,B,C's of Godly Living: H,I,J - Page 1

Psalm 119 is a psalm of RESTORATION. Restoration is when the people of God have strayed from fellowship with God. Their activity has become religion instead of relationship.

The salvation we have received is from the law:

1.      Moral – Jesus satisfies the moral obligation of a man before God and credits that to us by faith.

2.      Sacrificial – Jesus satisfies the Father’s wrath for Moral or Ceremonial failure or rebellion and credits that to us by faith.

3.      Ceremonial – Jesus sends his Spirit to live in the one who has faith and begins to conform them into his image thus separating them from the way the unregenerate word lives.

Remember our resources:

1.      God – that this is his word, his powerful word. This is the word that spoke all of creation into existence. In other words, our resource for strength and power comes from the God who spoke these words.

2.      God’s Word – we have a revealed objective word from God which speaks to everything we need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3 – 4).

3.      His Creation (Our Heart) – Conscience, Will, Intellect, Sensibilities, and Emotions.

H – the psalmist gives homage to God, His word, and his people (Psalm 119:57 – 64 Homage ח, Ḥêth)

The psalmist give homage to God, his word, and his people by:

1.      Treasuring God before anything else,

2.      Seeking guidance from his promises for every purpose, and

3.      Joining in a united companionship with God’s people in these specific activities.

I – the psalmist understands that injury from the Lord is good (Psalm 119:65 – 72 Injury ט, Ṭêth)

The psalmist has seen, experienced and now understands and agrees with God that when God injuries a person that the injury is for the good of the person and God is dealing well with them. The person is required to accept the injury in humility and be taught by it.

J – the psalmist joins others who hope in the Lord’s word (Psalm 119:73 – 80 Joins י, Yôdh)

Calvin says, “whenever the prophet prays for understanding being imparted to him, in order to his learning the Divine commandments, he condemns both himself and all mankind as in a state of blindness; for which the only remedy is the illumination of the Holy Spirit.”[1]

The psalmist knows he was fashioned by God and needs more work before he can make proper distinctions so to teach accurately.
