 Handling Grief and Loss

Christian Crisis Counseling Services is committed to assisting individuals through the difficulty of grief and loss. Loss affects people in different ways. A question as to the severity of a person’s loss should never be minimized by a third party.

Grieving is a process, or as some say, a journey that may take anywhere from three months to two years to recover. The process of hurting, loneliness, numbness and other abnormal feelings is a part of the journey to recovery. The good news is that He “will never leave you lonely nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

Children and teenagers are especially vulnerable during a time of loss. They will need role models who will show them lots of patience combined with positive reinforcement during this time. Their reaction to a death or loss may not be immediate but as the reality and the finality of the loss sets in then they will need loving, compassionate individuals to assist them in the process of grieving.

Self-Care Crisis Intervention

After the recent catastrophe many people are still dealing with stress and fatigue. Thousands in our community suffered losses that have devastated them while others are still struggling with the stress associated with the repeated upheaval in their lives.

Following are several ways to assist you in coping during this especially difficult time.

1. You are normal if you have anxiety and are feeling frustrated. Don't label yourself as weak, paranoid or any other stereotype.

2. Be involved in physical exercise alternating with a set time for relaxation.

3. Talk to people about what has happened.

4. Give yourself permission to feel "bad" and talk to others about your feelings.

5. Maintain a "Journal of Blessings," listing the positives that came out of the recent critical incident.

6. Get plenty of rest.

7. Eat well-balanced diets and regular meals.

8. Don't make hasty decisions. Many people do this after a traumatic experience only to regret it later.

9. Take ownership of the circumstances and make decisions relating to the traumatic events. The problems WILL NOT disappear. You must face them if you are to eventually cope.

10. Communicate your burden to God through prayer.
