Born in Savannah, Georgia on June 19, 1926, Mrs. Hill was the eldest of the two children born to George and Mildred Fuller. She attended and graduated from Beach High School in Savannah and later, in 1948, attended Savannah School for the Colored (now Savannah State University), and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. Mrs. Hill received a Masters degree from Atlanta University, and a Gifted Certification from Georgia College in the early 70's.
On July 28, 1952, Margaret married Mr. Fred Hill in Savannah, Georgia. Together they raised a family of five children: Dr. Jacqueline Hill-Walden, Ronald E. Hill, Mildred Michelle Hill-Green, Roy L. Hill and Debro J. Hill.
Mrs. Hill was employed by the Houston County and Macon County School Systems and Middle Georgia Technical College, where she was awarded the Lifelong Educator Award. She was the Church Pianist for many churches - St. James CME, Davis Chapel AME, Mt. Olive Baptist, New Hope Baptist, Greater Union Baptist, and her earliest yeas as a church pianist began at First Bryan Baptist Church in Savannah at the age of 13 years old.
Some of the many civic activities that Mrs. Hill was involved in included many years as the Superintendent of the St. James CME Sunday School, The St. James Missionary Board, Christian Youth Fellowship Board, Member of the Perry Beautification Committee, Secretary of St. James CME, and as an Eastern Star, aside from working with the youth group, Field of Moral, she also served as the Eastern Star's Musician on the state level and as Secretary on the local level. Mrs. Hill frequently visited and taught the local prisoners and was supportive of her husband and family during the civil rights struggle in this community. Mrs. Hill's granddaughter, LaToya Parneice Lawson describes her grandmother lovingly as, "A Traveling Grandma".
Mrs. Hill's hard work and dedication still impacts all of us at St. James CME, and her spirit will always "reside" in the "Margaret Hill Music Room" in our sanctuary.
