The St. James Tutorial Program

There are children in our community who benefit from the gift of one hour of time that is given to them by members of St. James CME Church in Perry, Georgia.  Members, Mike Harden, Ruth McHugh, Linda Lawton, and long-time member, Delores Lewis, give one hour of their time, three days a week to help children study and gain a better understanding of their homework.  Most days, Linda Lawton is there waiting for the children, offering them hot chocolate on cold winter days or juice and a snack on other days.  The children (and the parents) have come to trust and depend on the helping hand that is offered by these faithful church members, who understand what it means to the families and to the community.  It is a serious hour that teaches and stresses focus and discipline for good study habits.  Children who come to the program can expect to put in an hour of work...for a lifetime of rewards.

St. James member, Mike Harden, monitors the work of one of the students who comes to the Church for homework help. Mr. Harden is also and active member of Houston County's newly inducted charter of the national organization of 100 Black Men. So, this young man will benefit greatly from this homework partnership.

Linda Lawton has been a faithful member of St. James CME Church for many years. She is also faithful to the children and the parents who use the Tutorial Services. Linda is usually the one who welcomes the children in and offers them an after school snack. She also works hard to keep the children focused on the task at hand...serious study.

Mrs. Lawton has helped this student to "slow down" and concentrate. This young lady has taken the advice, and her grades are improving.

This student is working to gain confidence in her verbal presentation and to improve reading skills. Here, the student is working on her vocabulary skills.
