Children ran into waters off Waikiki on January 24th to retrieve a cross thrown in by Metropolitan Gerasimos. The ritual was part of a Christian Orthodox service known as the Blessing of the Waters, celebrating the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River, a holy day also known as the Epiphany. Eleven-year-old Maia Petrides, foreground, found the cross first and received a silver cross pendant in return.
