The Christian Church.............................................................................................................................................. West Union, Illinois

Who we are ...

The Christian Church at West Union, Illinois is … difficult to classify. The quick and easy description would be a missions oriented church in rural southeastern Illinois. That really doesn’t describe the church or the congregation. We are a unique mix of traditional and innovative.

The Christian Church in West Union was organized in 1890, with the building erected in 1891. Over the years various additions have been built and remodeling done to the building. New properties have been acquired. Construction has been done. These are good things. They however, are not the Church. The Christian Church is the people, a congregation of believers in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. Our local congregation is just a part of the Church.

Preaching Minister

Terry Henry has taken a new pulpit at Liberty Christian Church.

We are in the process of searching for a new minister.

Elders

The elders are responsible for the spiritual oversight of the church, providing for the needs of the church by maintaining a scriptural based congregation and involving and utilizing the resources provided by God through the congregation. Our elders are
Les Leighty, Brad Thompson, Mike Bumpus

Deacons

Deacons fulfill the Biblical role of helping the Elders with meeting the physical and spiritual needs of the church. Serving as Deacons for 2012 are Gary Angel,  Michael Leighty, Morgan Sanders, Charles Guyer.

======================================================================

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with idea of ministry teams.

We elect ministry team leaders annually for a 1 year term (the only exception is finance, which is a 3 year term).

Team leaders are to gather a group around them to care for that ministry. It isn't to be a "one man band".

Leaders are to help other develop their gifts and talents as well.

Not all are called to be teachers or musicians or song leaders, but all have a gift to contribute. The team concept is to help develop those gifts

Our Ministry Teams:

Education Ministry

Chairman: Brenda Booth

The Education Ministry is to develop an effective program of religious education for the entire church, effective for the salvation of unbelievers and equipping of believers for service in the church.

The Education ministry oversees the Sunday School, Wednesday night program, Vacation Bible School, and library.

Music Ministry

The Music Ministry is to develop an effective and organized music worship program for the church.

This ministry consists of worship service song leaders, pianists, organist, and other positions as determined by the ministry team leader. Members serve a 3 year term with 2 chosen every year. The Missions Committee administers a budget based on the faith promises of the congregation. It is not a pledge, no record is kept of individual promises. We promise to give a certain amount, trusting God to supply it

Building and Grounds Committee

The Building and Grounds committee is responsible for the physical plant ... the bricks and mortar so to speak.  They are given the responsibility and authority to take care of the day to day maintenance as well as construction and remodeling of our various buildings.

Members are appointed by the Chairman of the Church Board for a 1 year term.  The 2012 B & G Committee is Gary Angel, Charlie Guyer, and Tom Booth.

Pulpit Committee

The Pulpit Committee acts as a liason between the minister, the elders, and the church.   The committee conducts the search for a new minister and presents the candidate to the elders.  It carries out some of the administrative functions in ministerial relations. Annually (or more often as needed)the committee meets with the minister to reviews the goals and expectations the church has for the minister and that he has for the church.
