Singing Praises to the Lord.

By Sharon Styck

David, the author of the text verse, had many reasons to give thanks and praise to God. He rose from a mere shepherd, boy to a national hero after slaying Goliath, and as an adult, he rose to become King of Israel. Along the way, he sinned, was stricken with disease, and was told that his big dream of building a temple for the Lord would never happen in his lifetime. When David made an assessment of his life, he concluded that he had much to be thankful for and he penned, under the inspiration of the holy spirit this, 105th Psalm. There are times in our lives, when our circumstances are pretty tough, and it becomes difficult to see things we should give praise and thanks for. We need to realize, however, that even in the midst of difficult times, there is much to be thankful for, and recognizing those things and praiseing God is what the Lord wants us to do. What is it that we should be praising God for? In Psalm 105:1-2 he says give thanks to the Lord call on his name: make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him: tell of all his wonderful acts. Today we are going to take time to reflect on what God has been doing,  by singing praises to Him. Music is a very important part of my faith journy. As a person who grew up in this church, I can remember coming to church as a child, and as you would enter the church, would hear beautiful music. Maybe you noticed the music as you entered today. This was something I wanted to share with you today, because I think it is a very  meaningful part of worship. My Aunt Ruth was someone who was very significant in my life. I didn't realize the impact she had on me until I looked back and remembered how much she influenced me throughout my childhood. As a child, you see these people differently. You don't remember all the hours she spent teaching my sisters and I, how to sing and harmonize. Taking us on the road(this is for you Shirley, Shirley always wants to take the choir on the road.) to sing at different churches. Larry was sometimes included in our singing. I remember the  piano lessons, and how she would play the piano for me.  Another significant time in my life here at the church was the children. When I taught Sunday School many, many, years ago, I helped with the Christmas program, and was helping the kids with thier songs they needed, when I noticed this one little boy who would not sing, but just hung his head down, and didn't participate. After practice I went over to him and asked why he wasn't singing. He told me that he didn't like to sing because he sang so badly the kids would tease him. I proceeded to explain that being a good singer didn't matter to God, but the reasons that you sing does. When we are singing and we are singing from our heart and praising God, that is the most important thing in Gods eyes. Well, we are ready to start the program, and I happened to look up in the balcony, and there, right in the very front row, was this little boy who I had the conversation with. When the music started, you could hear him all over the church. He was very bad! But you know, I have never forgotten that play, and especially how brave that little boy was, who brougt tears to my eyes. What rewards we reap when we work with children. There is tremendous power available to us when we remember the past. The power to remember, can get us trough some difficult times and give us hope for the present. It is  good to remember the times when we were able to get through the bad times as well as the good times. To forget our history, can cause us to remain in a state of economic poverty. The same thing can happen to us spiritually when we forget where we have come from. If we don't remember, if we are not reminded, we tend to forget and are in danger of not walking forward in faith, but, in our own wisdom and own strength. So today, as we prepare to Praise God as a congregation, I thought it would be good to worship the Lord  through  remembering and telling of his wonderful acts in this church and in our lives, so we can continue to be walking by faith as we go forward. I want to remember the work God has done in this little church. God does not need a lot of people to do great works. Instead of thinking about all the things we don't have, we need to focus on all the things we do have. Let us sing Praises to the Lord.
