First Baptist Church of Scottsburg

**This page is still a work in progress, check back later for more!**

Our current facility has been on the site it is now since 1950. Prior to that our old building was located on the corner of Second and Wardell Streets and was built in 1890. Once the congregation outgrew that building we broke ground at our current site with the building completed in 1951. On May 2, 1960 a terrible fire destroyed the building. The only thing left standing was the bedford stone walls. However the members were set on rebuilding and on July 23, 1961 our brand new building was dedicated with an addition to the north wing of the facility. In 1967 air conditioning was installed in the sanctuary. In 1988 the need arose to expand our facility as the congregation had out-grown the current sanctuary. In 1989 we broke ground for the newest edition and in 1990 the building was dedicated. The new edition included a much larger foyer, new main office, pastor's office, conference room, nursery, choir room, and a much larger sanctuary with the capacity to seat about 400 people. The old sanctuary was converted into our new Fellowship Hall and old office was renovated into a modern kitchen. Our facility has remained un-changed since then with the esception of minor renovations in rooms inside the old part of the building. Below are some pictures of our building over the years and how it has grown and changed.

Pictured above is our orignal building built in 1890 on the corner of Second & Wardell Streets. It is still standing today and is still in use by another church.

The picture above shows our building engulfed in flames on the day that it caught on fire. The quality of the pictures of the fire are bad quality because the only photos we have are in the Scott County Journal a few days after the fire. This is a picture of the newspaper clipping.

The picture above shows the sanctuary after the fire was finally put out. You can see the pulpit to the left in the photo covered in debris. The steel supports for the steeple can be seen in the upper right hand corner.

The picture above shows our sanctuary (currently Fellowship Hall) after its completion in 1961.

The picture above shows our building on the site we are on currently today. This picture was taken in 1953 and shows how our building looked at that time prior to the fire.

Pictured above is the steeple on the building burning and then falling down into the sanctuary. The fire was started in the walls by an un-insulated vent for the baptistry hot water heater. Gas lines throughtout the building made the fire especially hard to put out.

The picture above shows the burned out shell of the church building. The stone walls were the only thing left standing on the inside with the exception of the bacement which only sustained water damage.

Pictured above is our church after the construction was completed in 1961. They added an edition onto the north wing of the church which can be seen to the far right in the picture. Just before the white door is a small white line running from the roof to the ground, this is where the edition was made.
