IN MEMORIAM '05
Kathryn (Breen) Engstrom '35 died at the age of 86 on November 12, 2004 at her home. She worked in civil service at Fort Riley until her retirement in 1978 and was married to Leonard Engstrom August 15, 1941 who preceded her in death on January 14, 2001. Survivors include her sons, Terry '60 of Concord, NC and Doug '65 of Junction City; three daughters, Carolyn Cook '67 of Junction City, Pippy '70 of Manhattan, Barbie '76 of Ft. Collins, CO and two sisters, Mary Sherraden of Chapman and Evelyn Beckett '43 of Vallejo, CA.
Jack Blanken, the husband of Karen (Ehm) Blanken '58, and father of Eric B. Blanken, died on February 10, 2005. He was an electrician at Fort Riley for 29 years.
Services for Irene T. Moritz '33 of Salina were held on February 15, 2005. She died at the age of 91 and had worked as a registered nurse at St. John's Hospital in Salina. Her survivors include three brothers, Warren of Donna Point, CA, Raymond '41 of Wichita, and Robert '49 of Blue Eye, MO, and three sisters, Helen Lester '33 of Rockford, IL, Rose Ann Fisher '36 of Olathe, and Pearl Munyer '37 of Sacramento, CA.
Mary E. (Hudspeth) May '42 died December 20, 2004. She worked in civil service at Fort Riley and was married to Thomas May who passed away shortly after her death. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Thompson of Junction City and Mary Ann Walker of Decatur, IL, and two brothers, Edmund '32 of Topeka and Paul '38 of Tulsa, OK.
Catherine (Gates) Kitchen '49 passed away on September 23, 2004.
Mary Janice Gustafson '66 of Wamego died at the age of 56 on March 7, 2005, in a vehicular accident. She graduated from KSU in 1971, from the Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in 1973, and was employed at Mercy Regional Health Center, Manhattan, at the time of her death. Survivors include her father William '40, two sisters, Margaret Ringer '71 of Concordia and Karen Leighton '78 of Quinter, and five brothers, Dr. William A Jr '65 of Lincoln, NE, Karl '75 of Texas, John '69, Gus '71, and Richard '76 all of Junction City.
Mike Kopmeyer '70 died January, 2005 at the age of 52 in a vehicular accident near Wichita. He earned two degrees from KSU in '74 and '83 and had taught in Junction City, Wamego, Neosho, Salina, Lawrence, and was academic and vocational counselor at the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility in Topeka. He was preceded in death by his parents Bill & Mary Kopmeyer and sister, Lynn Russo '73.
Norene (Danko) Waters, wife of Lenny Waters '68, died of cancer on September 26, 2004. She attended St. Xavier's for 11 years and worked at Fort Riley after graduation. She is survived by her husband, Lenny, her mother, Anne and her brother, Michael. Many alums will remember her mother, Anne Danko, who helped in the SX office, lunchroom, was Pep Club sponsor, and helped with CYO.
Elsie P. Beavers died on January 13, 2005, at the age of 75. She married John Joseph Beavers on January 21, 1950, who preceded her in death on January 17, 1997. She worked at Geary Community Hospital in medical records until her retirement. Survivors include four daughters, Paula Beavers '68 of San Antonio, TX, Mary Reed '69 of Junction City, Karen Griffiths '71 of Norton, Jolene Vega '72 of Sierra Vista, AZ; three sons, John '73 of Chapman, Robert '74 of Galena, and Pat '78 of Junction City; three sisters, Norma Locke and Alta Jo Bruce both of Wichita, and Esther Osborn of Gridley; one brother, Merrill Paden of El Dorado, and 11 grandchildren.
Michael H. Henney died on January 21, 2005, at the age of 56. He attended JCHS and KSU and worked in law enforcement and housing maintenance. His survivors include his wife, Colleen, and two daughters, Charlene '89 and Michelle Carter '92 and two grandchildren.
CW4 Lawrence W. Nagle died on January 29, 2005, at the age of 83. He retired from the US Army after serving 34 years. His survivors include his wife, Doris, one daughter, Anita Hernandez who serves as SX music and choir director, one son, Eddie, one brother, Clarence of Altoona, PA and five grandchildren, David, Joseph, Elizabeth '04, Sara, Joel, and one great granddaughter, Isabel.
Margaret Ann (Beavers) Meier '47 died at the age of 76 at her home in Holton. She attended Marymount College, completed her training as a nurse at St. John's Hospital, Salina, in 1950, and worked in many rural hospitals in Kansas including the Jackson County Health Department in Holton until her retirement in 1989. She was recently recognized as a Pioneer for the Jackson County Friends of Hospice. She married Marvin Meier on January 22, 1953, and is survived by him, one daughter, Mary Kay White of Lawrence; three sons, Dr. Michael of Salina, Mel of Topeka, and Shane of Newton; two sisters, Mildred McLaughlin of Chapman and Edna Green of Chino, CA; a brother, Jim Beavers '65 of Junction City; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorium '04 Sister Monica Schneider, age 83, died June 19th at the Salina Regional Health Center. She was a Sister of St. Joseph for 61 years and taught at SX. Most of her active ministry was spent as an instructor or administrator at Marymount College, Salina, KS. Ann W, Janasik passed away on July 2nd. She is survived by a son, Joe Collins 48, of Manhattan, KS and daughter Margie Ann Young 49, of Laurence, KS. Vera Helen Nicholson, age 88, died July 19th at the Geary Community Hospital. Funeral Mass was held at St. Xaviers with burial at St. Marys Cemetery. She is survived by one son, Patrick Nicholson 63 and two daughters, Kay Field 66 and Sheila Waymire 69 all of Junction City, KS and was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, and daughter, Julia Stires 65. Jack Russell Wahle 48 died August 3rd at his home in Junction City, KS. He was active in the community as a realtor and farmer. He attended Kansas State University and in keeping with tradition, was a member of 4 generations of Wahles who are SX alums. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Dolly (Devenney) Wahle 23 and is survived by his wife, Nadine, two sons, Robert Wahle 72 & wife, Terri Wahle 72 and Rodney Wahle 77, one daughter, Susan Bartosch 75, by his sister, Dorothy Schicktanz 54 of CO, by his brother, James Wahle 57 of Junction City, KS and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. William A. Lathrop, age 79, of Chugiak, Alaska, died August 11th of cancer at his home. He attended SX and joined the US Army, a veteran of WW II. He moved to Alaska in 1965 and worked as an operating engineer at Local 302 from 1975 to 1988. Survivors include three sons, three daughters, two sisters, Della Oglesby 38 of Olathe, KS and Aileen Alfano 40 of Branford, CN, one brother, Robert Lathrop 48 of Olathe, KS and twelve grandchildren. Anna Marie (Parrick) Hartman, age 89, of Junction City, died on August 17th at the Good Samaritan Center. She was a cook for SX and Lincoln Elementary schools and is survived by one son, Jerry Parrick 60 and two daughters, Shirley Carroll 63 and Kathy Robinett 57 of Junction City, KS. Virginia Glandorf, age 79, of Pappillon, NE, died July 27th. Funeral Mass and Rosary Service were held at St. Xaviers Church on August 27th, Father Albert DeSanctis officiating with inurnment at the Fort Riley Cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Lorraine Ruszczyk of NE, Chris Washburn of CA, and Judy Katzwinkel 74 of VA.
Agnes Hager Grant ('40), died Oct. 16, 2002. She graduated from St. Xavier High School and worked in civil service at Fort Riley in payroll untill 1945. She married Richard "Red" Grant in Dec. 1945. He died April 12, 1969. Survivors include four sons, Richard ('66) of Boynton Beech, Fla.; James ('67) of Milwaukee, Wisc.; Jeffrey ('72) of Manhattan, KS.; and Kevin ('76) of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Dr. Catherine Grant Fitzwater, ('64) of Glenville, W. Va., and Linda Grant Rubash ('69) of Dwight, KS. Also surviving is a sister, Gertrude Hager Waskowiak ('38) of San Bruno, Ca., and four grandchildren. Memorial services were held Oct. 25, 2002, at St. Xavier Church with Fr. Al Brungardt officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to St. Xavier Catholic Church, 218 N. Washington, Junction City, KS 66441.
The Anna Quinto Catalo funeral mass was held at St. Xavier Church with Fr. Al Brungardt officiating. She was preceded in death by her husband Gregorio Catalo, who passed away March 11, 2002. Survivors include Frank Catalo of Junction City, Robert Catalo ('67) of New York City, Louisa Catalo Campi ('73) of Larchmont, NY, and Linda Catalo of New York City.
David S. Cynova, 78, died April 11, 2002. Funeral services were held at St. Xavier Catholic Church. He was employed by Alexander Implement and Mohn Implement until 1980. He started his own business, Dave's Repair, until his retirement in 1996. Survivors include his wife Virginia and five sons: Jerry ('62) of Memphis , TN; Jim ('64) of Junction City; William of Wichita; Robert of Jefferson City, MO.; Daniel of Rockledge, FL; two daughters, Janet Miller of Junction City, and Beverly Thornberg of Omaha, Neb.
Eleanor M. Frakes, 83, passed away at her home, June 30, 2002. She worked as an inspector at the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant. Survivors include two sons: Jerry ('58) and James Frakes, both Junction City.
Ivan E. Harris, 81, passed away May 12, 2002. He had been employed by the Chevrolet dealership in Junction City for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his wife Florence and a granddaughter. Survivors include a son, Dan J. Harris ('64) of Junction City and two daughters, Linda A. Gfeller ('65) of Pratt, KS; and Barbara J. Byrson ('75) of Overland Park, KS.
John S. Marshall, 62, died June 23, 2002. He retired from the US Army after 20 years and then worked for the Junction City/ Geary County Health Department as a child care inspector. He is survived by his wife, Irma, and three sons, Josef and Stan ('85) of Junction City and John ('81) of Lawrence.
Judith A. Montgomery Roubicheaux, age 58, died at her home Oct. 6, 2002. She graduated from St. Xavier High School May 24, 1962. On Feb. 8, 1964, she married Lyle ALlen Tracy, who preceded her in death in May 1973. On May 2, 1975, she married James Roubicheaux, who preceded her in death on Mov. 18, 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly (Tracy) Coy ('84) and Tammy (Tracy) Devin ('85), both of Junction City, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mary Montgomery, a brother John Montgomery ('66), and one grandson. Memorial services were held Oct. 9 at St. Xavier Church with Fr. Al Brungardt officiating. Burial was at Fort Riley Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to St. Xavier Parish, 218 N. Washington, Junction City, KS 66441
