Idea of the Week

For this week…

  • Rotate where you sit during the worship assemblies.

Yes, I’m serious.

“Eeeeek!” you say.

Nobody says it has to be permanent. But just try things from a different angle.

This offers two advantages. First, you will probably have to nod at, grunt at, or even SPEAK TO someone different. Why, this could even cause new friendships to happen!

Second, it might make worship a bit more thoughtful. For most of us, where we sit during church services is very much a matter of habit, perhaps a matter of thoughtless habit. We’ve done it so much we don’t even think about it.

But whenever you attempt to break a habit, it forces you to consciously go through your new routine. You must actually think about what you are doing, how you are doing it, and why you are doing it.

Go for it! Change your pew! And don’t look back!

Coming June 24! A Clear View!
By John Norris

(Editor’s Note: This is a brief summary of the new video & audio improvements being installed in our auditorium. Thanks to John Norris for his behind-the-scenes work. cls.)

VIDEO
By June 24, 2007, Gospel preachers, using a computer laptop and Microsoft PowerPoint, will be able to display their overhead slides onto three (3) auditorium screens.

In addition to the existing middle video screen, two new permanent screens will be added to the left and right of the two main front support beams.  Although these two 4.5’ x 8’ screens will cover the existing speaker grills, they are designed to be “audio transparent.”  The sound system will also be receiving an upgrade.

Beginning June 18, CIM Audio/Video will be installing 3 Sanyo ceiling mounted video projectors.  A 4th projector will be installed facing the rear auditorium wall (where the clock is located).  This rear-facing “confidence monitor” allows the preacher to easily verify they have advanced to the next slide without having to continuously turn around.

Before services begin, most announcements will be projected onto these 3 screens.  Current updates and unexpected announcements will still be presented in person.  At various times, hymns may also be displayed on the screens for congregational singing.

AUDIO
Although the two audio speakers will remain in place and in use, the electronics driving these speakers will be upgraded to include a Yamaha audio console with digital signal processor (DSP) and volume limiter.  Two microphones will be added to the communion table to make it easier to be heard when 4 people are present.  A microphone will be added to the pulpit to accommodate song leaders who hold song books in their left hand.  Two omnidirectional “audience microphones” will be mounted on the front wall to better record congregational singings.

MEDIA CONSOLE
The Dell laptop computer controlling the PowerPoint slides will be located on the Media Console desk in the back right.  A preacher will advance their slideshow using an Interlink wireless remote.  The back right pew has been removed to provide significantly more room between the Media Console operators and the side wall for people leaving and entering during the service.  A 2” wide and 8’ long trench to contain audio and video cables will be chiseled out of the concrete floor from the Media Console to the back wall.

DESIGN NOTE
To install 3 front video projectors versus a single unit was a major decision and was not made lightly.  Currently, those sitting in the center section of the auditorium can frequently only see a portion of the existing screen.  Depending upon where the preacher walks, at times currently the screen is blocked for those sitting on the sides.  Several vendors were consulted.  Several designs were presented.  A variety of screen locations were prototyped.  It is felt the chosen solution is a very good, and in fact the best option, given the physical limitations of the front sloping ceiling and large front support beams.  The goal is to ensure everyone can see an entire screen no matter where they, and the preacher, are located.
