ST. DAVID'S CHOIR

Music Director Christopher Babcock

WELCOME CHRISTOPHER BABCOCK!

We are pleased to welcome Christopher Babcock as our new music director at St. David’s Church. Chris grew up in a town of less than a hundred people in central New York State. After graduating from Boston University, he earned a degree from Trinity College of Music in London and studied with organist Peter Hurford at St. Alban's Cathedral. For close to twenty years he led the music at two world famous New York City
parishes: the Church of the Holy Family near the United Nations and then the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square. Active in the American Guild of Organists in many capacities, he chaired and performed in the Centennial Convention in New York in 1996. He is currently Dean of the Cape Cod and the Islands Chapter and serves on the National Development Committee. He is a recent past Chair of Region I of the Association of Anglican Musicians. In 1993, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II bestowed upon him the grade of Knight in the Most Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Barnstable Land Trust and the Centerville Historical Museum. He has recorded for the Corinthian, B&V, and Ethereal labels.
Chris will continue to serve as summer organist at St. Andrew's by the Sea in Hyannis Port and share the organ bench in June, July and August at St. David’s with three gifted musicians - Sarah Hostetter, Jim Armstrong, and our own parishioner and choir member, Grace McGill.

Music at St. David's

Music is an integral and vital part of the worship at St. David's.

MUSIC REPORT 2008

The retirement of the Rector was a milestone at St. David's Church in 2008. Dr. Heuss was very interested in and supported liturgical music of various styles. His own significant talents in singing and piano are missed.

Health issues and changes of situation brought about four resignations from the Choir. Four new people, however, have joined. The quality of signing continues to improve. Gifts totaling nine hundred dollars were made to provide for a professional to join in the singing at Easter and Christmas. A gift from Jennifer Dawson in memory of her mother made possible a few additions to the choral library.

Services in the tradition of Taize were conducted on the first Sunday of the month from January through May.

Humid weather continued to cause problems with the organ in the summer. Air conditioning of the church would cut down significantly on costs associated with the instrument. A twenty year Guarantee from the building will expire in 2013.

Parishioner Grace McGill and other members of the Cape Cod and the Island Chapter of the American Guild of Organists played the Sunday services in June, July and August.

The Guild held its annual Epiphany Party in Nelson Hall after a talk on organ maintenance was given in the church.

Three very special musical events took place in 2008. In February nearly two hundred people came to hear a young people's choir, Chorus Angelicus, who were visiting Cape Cod from  Connecticut.

In August Brentwood Brass gave a concert with organ for a small but appreciative audience. In November the Choir from St. Peter's Church, Osterville sang Evensong on the afternoon of the Feast of Christ the King. This was very well attended and was followed by a  festive reception kindly given by the Choir of St. David's.
