What kind of church are you people anyway?

updated 4/27/2012

You spoke someplace about being a "titular diocese." Please explain what you mean by "titular"?

Borrowing from the practice of the Roman Catholic Church, a titular bishop is a bishop who is not the head of a functioning diocese, but rather holds title to a "titular diocese" ["diocese in name"].

Assigning a titular see serves two purposes. Since part of being a bishop means being the head of a church, titular sees serve that purpose for bishops without a diocese.

At the same time, the office of titular bishop memorializes ancient churches that fell into the hands of non-Christian conquerers or that were absorbed into other dioceses.

Traditionally, these sees are granted to auxiliary bishops, missionary bishops, and any other bishops who do not have direct jurisdiction over a functioning diocese.
