God is Still Speaking

Welcome to Dennis Union Church

If you’re new to the area, if you’re thinking of attending church but you’re not sure about where you might “fit in,” or if you’ve simply been away from church for a while, we’d love to meet you. Dennis Union Church is a friendly parish community, full of enthusiasm and ready to reach out to those in need.

We are a congregation of friendly and open people who have discovered the freedom and joy of genuine faith.  We are parents, singles, seniors, teens, and children who live out our faith daily in our varied walks of life.  We come from a broad mix of denominational backgrounds, including Roman Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Methodist.

We offer Christian education for all ages, and we’re blessed with the gifts and skills of Cindy Fiscus , our Christian Education Director and Youth Fellowship Coordinator,  who oversees our several youth programs and coordinates all Church School activities. We offer professionally staffed Nursery care on Sundays at 9 year round.  Our Youth Groups are for grades 5-12.

We have many engaging and stimulating weekly Adult Education classes as well as a Book Study group for adults, that meet throughout the week at various times. We enjoy a great music ministry with Maggie Bossi as our organist and choir director.  We are also blessed to have Bette Anne Crowell and Barbara Wells directing various mens and woman's choirs,  as well as our bell choir.

We are an established  church with a rich history, building upon hospitality and faith-sharing with all ages.  Central to our ministry is a strong mission of outreach. We are members of the United Church of Christ.  Check out our “Current Happenings and This Month's Calendar” links to find out what’s happening at Dennis Union Church on a specific day. THE STORY OF THE PEACE CANDLE

During the period of the Cold War, a Presbyterian minister from York, PA was visiting in Russia.  At the end of a service of worship in an Orthodox Church, a woman approached him.  She thrust three rubles into his hand and asked him to use them to buy a candle and keep it lit in the church in York as a reminder to the congregation to pray continually for peace in the world.  The minister followed her request.

The church in York sent many candles to many churches.  One candle was sent to the United Reformed Church in Marple Bridge, Derbyshire, England where The Rev. Michael Playdon was the minister.  When he became the pastor of the United Reformed Church in Hassocks, Sussex, England, he was given a candle to take with him to his new church.

In August, 1991, The Rev. Edward Walker served the church in Hassocks during the Rev. Mr. Playdon’s vacation.  At the end of the month, The Rev. Mr. Walker was presented with a Peace Candle to take to the Dennis Union Church in Dennis, Massachusetts.  The Dennis Union Church has sent Peace Candles to India, to the Congregational Church in Essex, Connecticut for the ordination of Bette Anne Crowell to the Christian ministry, and to the First Congregational Church in Briarcliff Manor, New York at the beginning of the ministry there of The Rev. David Powers, following his service at the Dennis Union Church.

A candle was sent to The Rev. David Spahn, a former pastor of Dennis Union Church with the request that he keep the candle burning to remind his congregation in Pasadena, California to pray for peace in the world.  Other candles have gone to Tennessee, to Vermont, to Adelaid, Australia and to a Methodist church in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England.  Members of this congregation have taken candles to churches in Alaska and Wisconsin.  From the church in Wisconsin, a Peace Candle finally made the trip back to Russia.

In December 2002, following a presentation at Dennis Union Church about the program “Seeds of Peace,” a candle was given to Ari Pipe Mazo, a Bar Mitzvah who made the presentation to take back to the Cape Cod Synagogue, where he was a member.

A candle was given to Charles and Evelyn Knights as they moved to Oregon, and one was given to Pauline Kightlinger when she moved to Virginia.

May the light of this candle and our continuous prayers help to guide us toward peace in our world.
