  CALL TO WORSHIP                                                (responsively)

With confidence, draw near to the throne of grace

to find mercy and help in times of need.

We bring our burdens and cares,

hoping to find relief and renewed strength.

Give thanks for God’s presence

in all times and places.

We rejoice that God hears us

     in this time and place.

Before God, nothing can be hidden;

no thought or deed escapes God’s notice.

We come to face ourselves as we really are,

aspiring to become all God wants us to be.

*HYMN – “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”     blue hymnal No. 25

  PRAYER OF CONFESSION                                         (all uniting)

Loving and forgiving God, we sometimes find ourselves in a spiritual conflict. We want to be followers of Jesus. We want to be filled with joy, but we are often heavy with worry and anxiety. We long for a vibrant prayer life, but our busy human lives leave us tired and sometimes afraid of silence and solitude. We confess that we sometimes fall to the allures of the world-having and doing more, running faster and harder—all the while we fail to see the needs of our neighbors and ignore the needs of our own souls. Forgive us, we pray. Renew our hearts to be open to receive your Grace. Refresh our spirits by the cleansing rain of your forgiveness. Rekindle within us faith, compassion and generosity. We ask this in the name of your Son, our Savior and friend, Jesus Christ. AMEN

Leader: Jesus is the model of wholeness, and He came not to be served, but to serve.  Let us pray together the Prayer of St Francis:

UNISON

O Divine Master, grant that we may not seek so much

To be consoled as to console,

To be understood as to understand,

To be loved as to Love,

For it is in the giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

D-YECH Supermarket Gift Cards:   Who would think that the everyday act of supermarket shopping can result in an effective means of helping to prevent homelessness?  Well, it actually can when you use the gift card program sponsored by D-YECH.  5% of the amount spent using these cards goes to the Housing Assistance Corporation which, in turn, uses these funds to help qualified families in danger of losing their homes in a time of misfortune.  Give it a try some time.  It’s easy! Check us out between services.

On October 30th, the Dennis/Yarmouth Recreational Department is hosting a huge Halloween party for school children.  Because of this conflict, we are canceling our October 30th Family Movie Night.  We hope to reschedule soon!

Nine to Dine – Friday, October 23rd:  We are again sharing good food and conversation at our fall Nine to Dine event.  Sign-up sheets (to be guests or hosts) will be in Fellowship Hall during coffee hours this morning.  Hosts provide the home and entrée and then contact the assigned guests who provide the hors d’oeuvres, salad, vegetable dish and dessert.  This is a fun evening with our DUC friends!                           -Your Activities Committee

Notice our worship begins slightly differently these days. The hand bell sounds to call us from conversations with one another to our Deacon at the lectern. The Deacon briefly offers the day's concerns.  The Prelude is musical contemplation to prepare and begin worship.  The Introit strikes a further note of praise leading to the call to worship.  The Deacons and staff hope this will enhance our flow of worship. The staff and Deacons welcome any questions or comments you have.  Let us worship God!

“Ideas” Silent Auctions:  We have been gifted with three pieces of art, from Jim Stackpole and Carol Gwynne, for silent auction.  Jim Stackpole has hand sculpted a birdhouse of our own church, and Carol Gwynne has donated two of her beautiful paintings (hanging in the hall across from the parlor).  View and bid on them during our Fellowship hours.  The winners will be announced on December 19th at our Dickensian dinner!

Christian Sympathy:  The ministers, officers and congregation of Dennis Union Church offer their sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Helen Geddes who died on October 1, 2009.  A memorial service will be held at our church on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at .

Men’s Fellowship:  Join us on Saturday, October 24, at Peter Berrien will tell us ways in which the fluctuations in marine ecology impact on various marine species, on New England fisheries, and on the availability of seafood – all of great interest to Cape Codders!  Note the special day and time.  Everyone is welcome!

“SHARING ONE BREAD, ONE BODY TOGETHER”

(A Stewardship Moment)

Children and the Bread of Life

We are reminded of Jesus’ love for children through the words written in Matthew 18:1-5.

And so, this morning we celebrate our youth and children here at Dennis Union Church.  In our bread basket today, we chose to present breads that are familiar to all children: Muffins (for the “Muffin Man who lives in Drury Lane), Gingerbread (for that rascally Gingerbread Boy who challenged us to “catch him…if you can!”), Shortbread (to honor the tiny tots who enjoy our nursery room), “Sticky Buns” (which remind us of their penchant to make a great mess), and Saltines (for the teenagers who enjoy adding seasoning to their conversation!)  But perhaps there are a couple of forms of bread that they are not familiar with: “Hush Puppies” that got their name from the bread thrown to keep dogs quiet while the kids fished in local  rivers  in  the  southern  part  of our  country;  and the wonderfully sweet Christmas Italian “Panettone” which literally means “bread baked by Tony”!  (Could that be bread baked by our very own Tony Coccio?)

Our youth will present the Christian Education Stewardship Moment with a “Bread (W)rap” which tells a version of the miracle of the loaves and fish by the Sea of Galilee.  Our children are made quite aware of Jesus’ love for them as they hear the story of the young boy who shares his “bread” with Jesus and thus sees his five small loaves feed thousands!  And most of our older children understand the special invitation given each month to share in the bread of communion.  These young, active lives are vital to the growth of our church of which Christian education is a major part.  Thank you to all parents, teachers, and especially Cindy Fiscus, our amazing Christian Education Director!
