  CALL TO WORSHIP                                                (responsively)

All around the world people gather in the name of Christ.

Many believe as we do, yet they neglect working for God.

They who are not for us are against us. (Matthew 12:30)

All around the world people gather in the name of Christ.

Some do not believe as we do, yet they do the work of God.

They who are not against us are for us.  (Mark )

All uniting:

We are not called to judge our neighbors, but to   witness the good news.

O come, let us praise the Lord together, worshiping God in spirit and truth.

*HYMN – “Shall We Gather at the River”         blue hymnal No. 701

  PRAYER OF WELCOME                                                (all uniting)

God, you are here when we arrive, and you are here when we leave.  You gather familiar friends and bring new friends to us as well.  You call out our names as though each of us were the one lost child for whom you were searching.  Your face lights up when you see us coming into your presence.  You are our home.  Teach us to open to others this spiritual home, to open the homes of our dwelling, always. Teach us how to see the stranger as neighbor, the guest as our friend. Give us a measure of your grace and assurance, that we might pass it on in a world already too cold and empty. We pray in the name of your Son, who calls us by name. Amen.

Music Note:  We welcome Women’s Song singers as worship leaders today and Lois Dall, singer and pianist, sharing her talents in the prelude and postlude piano/organ duets.  Lois and Andy Dall are new members of our church family, and Lois has been working with our youngest singers here at Dennis Union Church as they surprise us from time to time in worship.        Bette Anne Crowell

Also!  There are four different choirs at Dennis Union; for women, for men, a bell choir and a mixed chancel choir.  Ask for information…we welcome new members!!

Notice our worship begins slightly differently these days. The handbell sounds to call us from conversations with one another to our Deacon at the lectern. The Deacon briefly offers the day's concerns.  The Prelude is musical contemplation to prepare and begin worship.  The Introit strikes a further note of praise leading to the call to worship.  The Deacons and Staff hope this will enhance our flow of worship. The Staff and Deacons welcome any questions or comments you have.  Let us worship God!

Stewardship – Sharing One Bread, One Body Together:  Bread, this wonderfully diverse and common food, is truly "the Staff of Life" itself, and as such was not meant to be cut with a knife, rather it was to be "broken" in the hand and shared with one another.  In our "Bread Basket" today are the following types of breads: French Bread, Irish soda bread, bread sticks, croissants and Peter Berrien's round loaf.  If you wish to sample any of them, please feel free to break off a piece and have a taste!  (Please just leave enough for our worshipers to share as well!)  See this bulletin’s insert for two Old Testament “bread” stories!                                                                    -Ginnie Haskell

STEWARDSHIP

“Sharing One Bread, One Body Together”

Elijah and Ezekiel:  Both of these Old Testament prophets tell bread stories, one endearing and one weird…

Elijah’s story is found in 1 Kings, chapter 17.  Elijah was forced to hide from the wicked king, Ahab.  Elijah found safety near a brook, supplying him with water to drink, and God promised Elijah that ravens would bring bread for his sustenance daily.  And it was so.  Later, Elijah, seeing a widow who was collecting firewood, asked her for some bread.  Her sad response was that she had so little oil and flour that she could bake but one loaf for her son and herself.  She was slowly starving to death.  Elijah asked her to share the bread with him, and God would provide all the flour and oil she would need.  On faith, she baked the last loaf for the prophet,  and  as  God  promised  through Elijah,

the bowl did not run out of flour, nor the jar of oil.  She and her son were sustained by faith and the promise of God.

Ezekiel’s bread story is very strange.  In Ezekiel, chapter 4, this prophet is commanded by God to make bread from wheat, barley, peas and millet and eat just eight ounces of bread a day for over 300 days, while lying on his left side. (???)  God also promised to confound the people of Jerusalem so that they are distressed and anxious as they measure out their bread and water because they have turned away from God.  (A bread company, Food for Life, makes a bread with “sprouted grain” called “Ezekiel’s Bread”…It is available in health food stores…)
