First Church of Christ, Congregational, in Bedford, MA
We Are Thankful for Volunteers

There are so many ways to get involved in our church by volunteering. It is such a good way to get to know others in our church family. Our church survives because of the dedication of all our volunteers.

In addition to on-going volunteer opportunities, such as being on a board, there are also many opportunities for short-term volunteer jobs. Examples of these are: tent set-ups/take-downs in our driveway, moving tables to get ready for the fair, rummage sale, or pot luck dinners, helping with the church fair, helping with the rummage sale, spring and fall cleanup involving painting, raking and many miscellaneous jobs, kitchen clean up crew (meets a few times a year to give the kitchen a good cleaning), helping with major mailings, making scenery for church musicals, setting up for church musicals, helping to take down Christmas pageant scenery after church, folding newsletters, helping in the nursery and toddler rooms, helping in the kitchen for pot lucks and other events, signing up to be an usher, signing up to read the Scriptures during the church service, serving coffee at Coffee Hour after church, helping with collations...even just baking something for this or making and donating sandwiches, joining in once a year the Monday before the Fall Fair to make apple pies, and driving people to and from Carleton Willard on Sunday morning. These are just a few of the many ways you can volunteer to help.

If you are interested in any of the above, in serving on any of the Boards, or in anything not listed yet, do contact the church office (781-275-7951) or speak to any of our staff. They love to have volunteers call!! We will need lots of volunteers for our Fall Festival...and for our Turkey dinner too!

Volunteer Drivers Needed

Carleton-Willard Village seeks volunteer drivers. Want to make a difference in someone’s life? But you don’t have much time to spare? Consider volunteering to drive a Carleton-Willard resident to and from a medical appointment. Offering to give someone a ride just once or twice a month would be a big help to one of our seniors, and you will get to know some very interesting people. A valid driving license and proof of automobile insurance is required. If you are interested and want to know more about this or other volunteer opportunities, contact Stephanie Smith at 781-275-8700 or ssmith@cwvillage.org.

Welcomers (Ushers) and Coffee Hour Hosts Needed

  • Two "Welcomers" are needed each Sunday to help the Deacons setup for worship and greet people as they arrive. Welcomers will collect the offering during the service and help tidy-up the Sanctuary following the service.
  • People are needed to host the coffee hour following the service. It can be as simple (just a pot of coffee) or as elegant (tea cakes and fresh fruit) as you would like to make it. You decide.

To sign up to be a Welcomer (usher) or a Coffee Hour Host, please contact Mark Guetersloh.

Volunteer Kitchen Manager Needed

We need a volunteer to manage our kitchen, check supplies, etc. Our immediate need is to defrost the freezer in the kitchen. Please call the office at 781-275-7951 if you would like to do this.

Volunteers Needed to Help Stewardship Board

The Stewardship Board is looking for volunteers who are willing to help with small tasks to be done in both the church and the manse from time to time. Examples are spackling and patching walls, repairing door mechanisms, fixing doors that no longer fit in the door frames properly. Also, they are looking for volunteers who may be interested in getting together with several others to clean out some areas in the church, such as part of the dirt cellar. If you are interested in helping, please call Jim Maxon.

Photos of Some of Our Volunteers

We are including a few photos of volunteers we see often in our church office. More photos will be added to this page later.

Tom Crowther

Tom Crowther appears in our office almost daily. He troubleshoots computer problems, and helps with other repairs.   He also is responsible for the audiotapes of our services.

Pat Konkle

Pat helps in the office on an almost weekly basis. She hand writes many of our thank you notes to those who have made special memorial contributions to our church.

Joanne and Dennis Pantano, Mickey Webber

Thank you to Joanne Pantano who takes care of our flower garden, and to Dennis Pantano for prepping and refinishing the bench near the gardens in front of the church.

Doris (Mickey) Webber also helps maintain these flower beds. The colorful display begins in the spring with many of the perennials in bloom.

Collation Committee Needs Help

The Collation Committee is in the process of updating its calling list. What is the Collation Committee? Briefly it is a group of church volunteers who provide refreshments on short notice for guests following funeral or memorial services held at the church. This is done at the request of the bereaved family through our pastor. Baked goods, sandwiches, fruit platters, cheese and crackers etc. are solicited from the names on our calling list. In addition to providing food, volunteers are solicited for food set-up, serving, and/or clean-up.

When the committee was originally organized in 1994, there were 60 names on the calling list. At present there are about 45. For each collation there are approximately 18 to 20 women involved in one way or another and we try not to impose on the same people each time. Unfortunately the callers go through their lists rather quickly due to people having previous commitments, or are out of town, ill, incapacitated or working so we may call the same people each time but there is no obligation to say “Yes” each time called. Also each person has a choice in how she wishes to participate.

If you wonder if your name is on the calling list or want to have your name on the list to help, please call Sue Crowther. We would also like to know who is available on weekdays and who is available only on Saturdays. This last request is geared to those who work during the week but would still like to help in some way.

~ Sue Crowther
