Prayer Shawl Knitting Group

An outreach to persons in need of special support

When weekly choir rehearsals started, a few spouses of choir members decided to bring their knitting. Quickly the group started growing and seeing the potential for a new outreach for our congregation, Bonnie Towle introduced the knitters to the Prayer Shawl Ministry that began in Hartford Seminary about ten years ago.

Each completed shawl is dedicated, wrapped in love, and stored until it is delivered to a person in need of special support and comfort. Already, three shawls have been presented to grateful recipients. (as of 8/9/08)

The group gathers every Wednesday evening at 6:30 at the Meeting House. Simply come with your knitting and enjoy the conversation. On occasion, there is even a preview of Sunday’s choir music offered for review and friendly critique!

Friday Night Dinners

An outreach to the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod Inc.

Shortly after beginning his new full-time ministry on Cape Cod, Rev. Jim Scovil made arrangements to introduce himself to the Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Cod, Ruth Provost.  Following subsequent visits and discussions with Ruth and other staff, Jim suggested that the new congregation find a way to offer support to the Club.  With that Ruth shared the need for help with Friday night dinners.  The food is donated and the staff does the set-up, serving and even the clean-up, but a crew to actually prepare the meal would be a big help, Ruth explained. Thus, the first outreach program for the New Mashpee Congregational, UCC church began!

Following standard application procedures, volunteers are put into the rotation.  You should arrive at about 3:15 pm and plan to work until 5:00 pm.  Just about the time you feel that you have more than enough time to prepare the food, something will happen to make you wish you had a little more!  It can get a little hectic at times but that makes it all the more fun.  The best part of the job is seeing the smiles on the 100 or so faces of the children as they devour the meal and as they make an occasional trip to the kitchen to see what’s on the menu for the day.
