As is typical of United Church of Christ congregations, we govern ourselves in collaboration with our pastors who are also members of the church. We discern our vision, mission, program focus and worship life, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We believe that all members have been given gifts by God for ministry within and beyond the church and work together to live into our shared vision. While we are autonomous in terms of our own worship, assets and governance, we are blessed to be in covenant with other churches regionally and nationally. Together, we support our denominational structure, polity, staff and shared mission programs.
Who actually deals with the day to day operations?
The staff ensures the smooth day to day operation of the church, but it is the boards, committees and council that set the goals and policies, and committee members who do much of the work. The staff supports the committees; it is very much a joint effort. Elections to boards and committees are held annually in May. As a congregation, we are also committed to supporting individuals or groups who feel called to pursue a certain project or ministry that need not be overseen by a particular committee or board. We seek to be a permission giving church and are continuously discerning how our structure needs to adapt to how we can maximize our member’s potential for living our shared vision.
How are the committees coordinated? What is the church council?
We do still have a standing structure. The congregation elects a Moderator who chairs all the council meetings (and annual and special congregational meetings), a Clerk, and three at-large members who join with a representative from each committee and board to form the church council. The council is a communicative and supportive body where activities are coordinated and major issues affecting the church are discussed. It is also a visioning body that tries to listen for the Spirit’s leading and engages the congregation in vital discussions.
How do the Ministers fit in?
The congregation and the minister have a covenant relationship. The ministers lead worship services, administers the sacraments, and promote the activities of the church with the various boards and committees. They also offer a variety of programs for spiritual growth, support groups and other activities that help our members grow in faith and offer avenues for serving Christ in our world.
We also have Administrative and Music staff - How do they fit in?
The staff includes the Administrative Assistant, the Organist and Junior and Senior Choir Directors. The choir directors are part of the music committee and plan the music program for the church in collaboration with the Deacons and pastors who oversee the worship life of the congregation. The music staff do much to encourage additional music offerings by church members and friends.
How do I propose an idea, make a suggestion, or offer my services?
One approach would be to speak to the appropriate committee or board chair directly. The administrative assistant can put you in touch with the right person. Depending on what it is you wish to share or offer, you may also want to contact one of the pastors. We also encourage initiatives that are not tied to standing committees. Please let us know what you are thinking about!
Who can attend meetings?
Almost all committee and board meetings are open. Anyone can attend; however, only the elected members of the committee can vote. Congregational meetings are open to everyone. Visitors have voice. Member shave voice and vote.
How can I serve on a committee or board?
Membership on standing committees is open to everyone. Church membership is not required on all committees and getting involved even before joining can be a great way to get better acquainted with the people. Let the chair of either the committee you are interested in or the nominating committee know of your interest. The nominating committee consists of the moderator and council members at large. You can ask the administrative secretary for contact information. We elect committees in May at the annual meeting and are always looking for new volunteers with new ideas.
More questions, whom can I ask?
You can start with the Pastor, Ute Molitor, the Associate Pastor Susie Allen, the Administrative Secretary or any of the Deacons. Any of these people can help and would be able to refer you to the right person. Contact for more information: boxborochurch@verizon.net .
