Our interest in helping outside of our community continues. There is always a need for those in Afghanistan.
The push now is for winter clothing for girls and boys, such as boots, jackets, gloves, scarves, and blankets. It gets very cold in Afghanistan, and substantial numbers of people have died from the cold in the last winter.
We only mail things that are in good condition, sometimes mending and laundering them. Size and weight of an item do matter, as postage is about 50 cents per pound, and we use that in evaluating whether to send some items.
We cannot accept clothing with American identification (flags, USA, etc.) or camolflage styles. We are sorry but we are also unable to accept items with Christian symbols. Items which are donated that do not meet these implied standards are subsequently passed on to other charities in our area..
You may drop your donations in the church foyer, or bring them to the church on the last Sunday of the month between 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
Since we began sending packages to Iraq four years ago, and now to Afghanistan, we have sent 4,033 pounds to military persons for distribution in the interest of the chilodren there, from infancy to teens.
The most common items we send are clothing including shoes and boots, and blankets. We have sent nursing and school supplies when requested. And, we send dolls, stuffed animals, and toys and balls of all kinds (not battery operated).
Because of the terrible way that the Taliban is treating young girls... even to the point of burning schools and throwing acid on schoolgirls as they head for school, we have now focussed on young girls and boys, and are rejecting adult clothing, especially clothing for men.
