THE GREAT LITANY we use today was part of the original Book of Common Prayer 1549. Over the centuries it has been revised and we use a form today that has been authorized by General Convention and our Bishop for trial use. Part of the change from the format printed in the Book of Common Prayer 1979 is the intercession for all three branches of government in the
WEDNESDAY EUCHARISTS. The Wednesday Eucharist has not had attendees for some weeks. So, in order to preserve a weekday Eucharist we will move it to 9 am Wednesdays with Morning Prayer.
MORNING PRAYER IN DECEMBER. The Daily Office of Morning Prayer will be at Saint James’ Watkins Glen during the month of December. See schedule above.
WARM COATS FOR THE WINTER. The winter clothing give-away in conjunction with the visit of the Mobile Food Truck of the Southern Tier in November was so successful that we will do it again in December. The truck is at Schuyler Outreach (Saint Mary’s Center) on December 16th. Winter clothing, particularly large sizes and children’s, will be welcome until Monday the 15th. Almost 200 coats were distributed in November.
ADOPTING A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS. Again this year the Labor of Love effort (begun by our saint, Rosanne) combines with Schuyler Outreach to coordinate the adoption of families for Christmas. Information regarding adoption of families is on the insert again today. It is possible to contribute to the effort without adopting a family, too. There is a suggested food list as well. The distribution to adopted families will be from the Saint James’ Parish House the week of December 8th. Drop off of gifts will be the 8th and 10th, pickup will be on the 9th and 11th. Family sizes range from a single Mom and child to larger families. All families have been qualified by Schuyler Outreach. Please pray about adopting a family this year. [The boxes for the
CHRISTMAS WREATHS. They were all made on Friday and just waiting for you! $15, $18 with a bow. Available at Saint James’ Church.
HYMN NOTE FOR THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
by Frank Steber
Webster defines "canticle" as "a non-metrical hymn ... said or chanted in church." During the Advent season we continue to sing Canticle 6 (S 204), the Gloria in excelsis, each Sunday.
Known as the Old Scottish Chant, it has been sung for 200 years, since The Reverend William Smith published music and text together in A Churchman's Choral Companion To His Prayerbook (1809).
That chant had first been printed in
It reappeared in A Collection of the Best Tunes, Canons, and Anthems, published in 1758.
In its long history in Anglican/Episcopal services, the Old Scottish Chant "has retained a strong appeal as a congregational chant."
CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS. It is time to order the Poinsettias for Christmas décor. Memorials and Thanksgivings may be made and will be remembered in the Christmas bulletin. At
BISHOP SINGH’S VISITATION(S!). The advance word is that Bishop Singh will be making two visitation to EPSC this year. The last Sunday of March to Saint James’ and the last Sunday of July to
