In Class
6th and 7th Grade
Today in confirmation we had a quiz covering the first 9 books of the Bible in order (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1st Samuel and 2nd Samuel). EACH CHILD WHO TOOK THIS WEEK’S EXAM RECEIVED A 100%--GREAT JOB! If your child was absent, please work with your child so he or she knows the first 9 books in order and is familiar generally what the contents of each of the books. Next week we will be covering in class 1st & 2nd Kings, 1st & 2nd Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job and Psalms. Please have your child learn these books in order…
The children in our class come from all different backgrounds. Some of them know almost every story in the Bible. Others are not as familiar with some of the main figures that appear in Old and New Testament. In class we will be mentioning the main stories and people that they should know, but since we have a very short time with your children in class, we really rely on your participation at home to reinforce and supplement what we are covering.
In class, each child has notes on the main concepts of each book that they should know. If your child was absent, these are the basic concepts we discussed in class:
Genesis: contains Creation, The Flood, Abraham & Sarah, Isaac, Jacob and Esau, Joseph.
Exodus: contains the story of Moses, the escape from Egypt, the 10 Commandments and the journey to the promised land of Canaan.
Leviticus: contains rules for worship and religious ceremonies in Israel.
Numbers: tells the story of the struggle of the Israelites wandering the desert for forty years from the time they left Egypt until they arrive at the border of Canaan. It is called Numbers because an important part of the book contains the census of the people.
Deuteronomy: Moses recounts the events of the past forty years. He reminds the people of God’s covenant with them. Joshua is commissioned as the next leader of the people. Moses dies. Please review these notes with your child and make certain that he or she is familiar with these important Bible Stories.
Joshua: The story of the Israelite invasion of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua. Includes the crossing of the Jordan and the famous Battle of Jericho
Judges: Stories from the lawless period of Israel’s history between the invasion of Canaan and the establishment of the monarchy. These stories are about national heroes called judges (most of whom were military leaders rather than judges as we know them). The most famous one is Samson. Confirmands should be familiar with the story of Samson and Delilah.
Ruth: Confirmands should be familiar with the story of Ruth. A woman and a foreigner who turned to God and became part of His faithful people.
1st Samuel: The transition of Israel into a monarchy…stories center around the last great judges: Samuel, Saul and David. Confirmands need to be familiar with the story of David and Goliath.
2nd Samuel: The sequel to 1st Samuel contains the history of David’s reign. David is a man of deep faith and devotion to God. Confirmands should be aware how important of a figure David is.
