For Unto Us a Child Is Born
Ahh...Christmas! What a wonderful time of year! It's a time to get together with family and friends. It's a time to share gifts with people you care about. It's a time for good food, stockings hung by the fireplace, Christmas plays, and the like. It's a time that, since it comes around only once a year, we look so forward to it getting here!
I remember how my mom used to work and save to buy all of her kids (and she had six) the special things they had hoped for all year. She made it so special! From decorating the Christmas tree, to wrapping the gifts behind closed doors, to hiding them all over the house, and threatening us to take it all back if we peeked, she made it something memorable! I still see the gleam in her eyes as she watched her children open the gifts she had wrapped so carefully and placed under the tree strategically so we all could get gifts as they were passed out. Mom and Dad both enjoyed watching the flying paper on that special morning as their kids, with bright eyes even with little sleep, opened one gift after another with glee! Oh, how I long for those days¡Kwhen all we had as kids to worry about was not losing the pieces to our toys in the heap of paper in the middle of the room.
And always, without fail, mom would cook a gigantic breakfast, which consisted of a country ham...you remember the old salty country ham, don't you?...that Dad had bought from the local ham store, along with scrambled cheesy eggs, hash brown, homemade biscuits and sausage gravy! Yum! Yum! I could handle some of that right now! Dad would always bring in whole boxes of oranges, apples, bananas and nuts, which we would eat all through the Christmas holiday while school was out, until we nearly popped! Grandma would make her world-renowned real fruit cake with hickory nuts we helped her pick up on the hill behind her house! It was a time that's now gone by and a new generation has emerged...grandkids who love the video games and gift cards so they can buy what they want! We're now making wonderful, new memories with those who we hope will be looking back as I have and remember these times as some of the best in their lives! I love it!
But one thing mom always wanted me to do, after I was called into the ministry at least, was to lead the family in prayer, thanking Jesus our Savior for coming into the world to save us, before we open that first gift! She and Dad loved the Lord, and they were so thankful for the gift of salvation Jesus had purchased for us all. And they wanted their family to always remember that Jesus was definitely the reason for the season! They are both with Jesus now, enjoying Christmas with the one who made it all possible!
They have come to know firsthand the one Isaiah wrote about in Isaiah 9:6..."For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."
I hope as you spend time with your family and friends this holiday season, that you remember who it is that made it all possible, and that you'll take time out to pray with them, and maybe even read the Christmas story from the Bible, so that you can pass on to them what the true meaning of Christmas is all about! As we face the New Year, let us face it with earnest expectation and hope that there will be "Peace on earth, and good will towards men!" Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Towe household and New Life Church of God! God Bless! Pastor Rick
