From the Diocesan Coordinator of Youth Ministries

Roger Speer, Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio Youth Ministries dsodym@sbcglobal.net cell phone: 614-330-6797 web: http://www.dsoyouth.org

check out www.dsoyouth.org for the fall and winter retreats for grades 6 - 12.  Don't be left behind!

Take time to notice the altar vessels (dishes) next time you're at communion on Sunday.  We use two chalices (cups) and two patens (plates) to serve the bread and wine on Sunday mornings.  Our newest set is a ceramic set created by our own artist Laurel, last spring in her Junior year.  After a time on display at a student art show in Indiana, the vessels were presented at the offertory at COS for their intended use.  Because of their beautiful fall colors, we are using them every Sunday during this season.  Thanks be to God for talented members, generous hearts, and objects of beauty!

Sharing the love through a school project

Sarah A, a freshman at Cinti. Art Academy, was required to do an art project oriented towards children.  Here’s what she came up with!      *     I ended up contacting suitcases for kids, an organization that collects suitcases for foster children since they move from home to home so much and most justv have to carry their belongings in a garbage bag. I painted them a suitcase for a pre-school age girl in the style that I myself would have wanted it when I was a preschooler.(it has awesome flat mermaid and bubble graphics, it's super sweet!) I had a great Critique, my peers and professor loved it, and it'll be going to some little girl at Family House in Toledo, Ohio ASAP.

What can one person do to eradicate poverty?  The Millenium Development Goals and YOU!  What makes Oprah, Bono and Warren Buffett extraordinary is not their wealth or fame or talent -- it's that they use what they have for the sake of those who have not ... Bono uses his musical gifts to move hearts and his influence to shape policy. Oprah takes her influence over millions of viewers and uses it to educate about things like AIDS in Africa and the plight of refugees. Warren Buffett takes his financial riches and uses them to eradicate disease and poverty -- and challenge others to do the same. They all recognize that we are given gifts so that we might give them away.  And that's where you come in. Because the only difference between you and them is scale.  You have power and access to systems of power. You have education. You have wealth. You have artistic talent. You have influence. And when you give them away, you get to meet and serve Christ in ways that transform lives, transform hearts and transform the world.     Use your power - Write your senators and representatives and let them know that the MDGs are a voting issue. Join the Episcopal Public Policy Network and become a ONE Episcopalian. Let your bishops and presiding bishop-elect know that you support their naming of the MDGs and global reconciliation as our mission priority.

COS' NEXT GENERATION:
The best thing about C.O.S. are the people.  They are kind and loving.  They will welcome any new people.  All the people love the children.  The people at C.O.S. let children color and read.  That is very kind.  My favorite person is Mother Paula.  She makes the children feel special.  I also like how the people at C.O.C. let the children help with passing out names.  They also let the older children help read things.  Most years on Easter, the people of C.O.S. color and hide Easter Eggs for the children to have an Easter Egg hunt after church.  The children even have their very own gospel lesson.  C.O.S. would be very different without all the kind people.   -- by Ronni (Veronica) U.

We're working on a schedule to help out about once a month, serving supper to neighborhood kids at St. Philip's Church in Northside on Friday evenings.  Watch for more info on "Phil's Place."

Thank you to all the youth members who sorted the collection after “A DAY OF CHANGE.”  Treasurer Jeff U. says, “ The kids counted over 2,500 coins, for a total value of nearly $150.00.”  This will go to serve the homeless at the Open Door Ministry.

Congratulations, Laurel!  There was a Sycamore High School art exhibit at Miami U., and Laurel had a drawing that was chosen to be in the exhibit.

News from Megan in Berlin

Though I haven't written in quite some time, COS hasn't been far from my thoughts. I am very much aware that I am supported by your prayers and it helps me a great deal to stay focused, and to recommit when I falter. I'd like to let you and the church know what I have been doing lately to further the outreach project that I am working on. + I have contacted a number of congregations in the Charlottenburg area (a neighbor-hood of Berlin in the former British sector where my own Anglican parish is located) and have found their various youth pastors very interested in involving their youth in service work. One of the youth cafés in the neighborhood has offered the use of their space for an "Infotreffen," an informational event, for the youth of Charlottenburg to explain exactly what it is that I'm doing and how they can get involved. This will take place on May 4th. Until then, I will be visiting the different churches and speaking with their confimation classes in order to personally invite the youth to come on the 4th. +

More from Megan in Berlin …..In the meantime, service events have already begun. After contacting the Berlin City Mission, I took some members of my parish to help prepare food at the Emergency Homeless Shelter, which operates during the cold months. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the following week to help out again! Though the City Mission doesn't often work with groups of volunteers, their volunteer coordinator is very excited about finding projects for larger numbers of youth in the future. This sort of volunteer work, done on an event by event basis, will help, I think, to get youth involved in service and to develop their interest in doing so on a regular basis. It is my hope to build a core of young people to work with to revive one of the closed youth cafés.

…one more!

+     As I mentioned in my last letter, I am also responsible for young people's ministries at the Anglican parish, St. George's. I have implemented the Godly Play curriculum for the Children's Church and the children are slowly starting to get used to it, as am I. I am amazed at the children's fascination with topics such as the Trinity, as well as the depth and insight of some of the questions they ask.     +    The older children are now half way through a ten week acolyte training course, at the end of which they will be commissioned to serve in the church. They have each served for the first time as torch bearers and are now learning about the church building, the liturgy and an overview of some of the basic tenets of our faith. Through their service and knowledge, it is my hope that they will come to feel more a part of the parish family, and will be seen as such by the parish.    +    Once again, I want to tell you how very much it means to me to know that I am being prayed for. It is very easy to be overwhelmed by this effort and to become lost in its complexity but I am reminded that I am not alone and am supported. Thank you again!  Yours in Christ,  Megan Sauer
