Thank you to all the youth members who sorted the collection after “A DAY OF CHANGE.” Treasurer Jeff U. says, “ The kids counted over 2,500 coins, for a total value of nearly $150.00.” This will go to serve the homeless at the Open Door Ministry.
Congratulations, Laurel! There was a Sycamore High School art exhibit at Miami U., and Laurel had a drawing that was chosen to be in the exhibit.
News from Megan in Berlin
Though I haven't written in quite some time, COS hasn't been far from my thoughts. I am very much aware that I am supported by your prayers and it helps me a great deal to stay focused, and to recommit when I falter. I'd like to let you and the church know what I have been doing lately to further the outreach project that I am working on. + I have contacted a number of congregations in the Charlottenburg area (a neighbor-hood of Berlin in the former British sector where my own Anglican parish is located) and have found their various youth pastors very interested in involving their youth in service work. One of the youth cafés in the neighborhood has offered the use of their space for an "Infotreffen," an informational event, for the youth of Charlottenburg to explain exactly what it is that I'm doing and how they can get involved. This will take place on May 4th. Until then, I will be visiting the different churches and speaking with their confimation classes in order to personally invite the youth to come on the 4th. +
More from Megan in Berlin …..In the meantime, service events have already begun. After contacting the Berlin City Mission, I took some members of my parish to help prepare food at the Emergency Homeless Shelter, which operates during the cold months. We enjoyed it so much that we came back the following week to help out again! Though the City Mission doesn't often work with groups of volunteers, their volunteer coordinator is very excited about finding projects for larger numbers of youth in the future. This sort of volunteer work, done on an event by event basis, will help, I think, to get youth involved in service and to develop their interest in doing so on a regular basis. It is my hope to build a core of young people to work with to revive one of the closed youth cafés.
…one more!
+ As I mentioned in my last letter, I am also responsible for young people's ministries at the Anglican parish, St. George's. I have implemented the Godly Play curriculum for the Children's Church and the children are slowly starting to get used to it, as am I. I am amazed at the children's fascination with topics such as the Trinity, as well as the depth and insight of some of the questions they ask. + The older children are now half way through a ten week acolyte training course, at the end of which they will be commissioned to serve in the church. They have each served for the first time as torch bearers and are now learning about the church building, the liturgy and an overview of some of the basic tenets of our faith. Through their service and knowledge, it is my hope that they will come to feel more a part of the parish family, and will be seen as such by the parish. + Once again, I want to tell you how very much it means to me to know that I am being prayed for. It is very easy to be overwhelmed by this effort and to become lost in its complexity but I am reminded that I am not alone and am supported. Thank you again! Yours in Christ, Megan Sauer
