Bethany Covenant Church
BUILDING COMMITTEE MEETING
June 21, 2005
PRESENT: Luke Converse (Building Committee Chairman), Lynn Converse, Joy Frame, Ed
Hatters, Gail Means
ABSENT: Pam Blything, Dale Fisher, Tom Johnson, Bill Klaus, Jim Kristoff, Pastor Stacey
Littlefield
Luke opened the meeting with a reading from Exodus 35, which describes the work of the whole community to create sacred space following God’s instructions to Moses on how to build the Tent of Meeting. We were impressed by Moses’ leadership and the people’s willingness to give according to how the Lord had blessed them. Luke then led us in prayer.
AGENDA:
1) Update on bids
2) Recommendation from Building Committee to Council on parking lot expansion.
3) Decide whether we as a group need to call a special congregational meeting to present bids for architect and parking lot expansion and get congregational approval to expend funds.
UPDATE ON BIDS:
- Design Work: Two complete bids for design work were received from Con-Tech Architects and Krumroy-Cozad Construction Corporation. Krumroy has more experience with designing and building churches than does Con-Tech. Krumroy would not charge for design work if we contract with them to build. If we use their designs but do not contract with them to build, their charge would be $4,500. Con-Tech would charge $5,000 for design work.
- Parking Lot Expansion: Two bids received:
- G.A.R. Paving - $29,990
- Carron Asphalt Paving, Inc. - $36,555
Both bids include excavation, grinding of tree stumps (we must remove the trees), installation and striping of the lot. Additional cost to relocate utility pole (or install four 4” concrete posts around it) would be approx. $2,000. Excess soil would be saved to be used in the serenity garden. Two more companies will be invited to bid. We will check references on all bidders.
PARKING LOT EXPANSION:
The Building Committee unanimously recommends the proposed parking expansion of approximately 40 spaces on the southeast portion of our property.
SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING:
Without congregational approval to accept bids for designs and parking lot expansion, this Committee cannot go much further. We would prefer a special meeting to address above expenditures. Luke will confer with Pastor Stacey and Jim Kristoff regarding a date. Congregation must have two weeks’ notice. Gail will draft a letter and bulletin announcement for Chairman’s approval.
Meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Gail Means
