First Presbyterian will celebrate Presbyterian Heritage Sunday

Sunday, May 20, is a day of remembering and celebration at First Pres. We will celebrate our 190th anniversary, and the 100 year old gift of a baptismal font from daughter church Second Presbyterian. Excerpts from the Presentation Address will be read by Steve Scurlock, a member of Second Presbyterian Church. The children will sing a special anthem. The children’s sermon will focus on the baptismal font and the message delivered by Pastor Stan, will address Christian Unity. Ceremonies honoring Peter and Charlotte Weaver and First Presbyterian Church’s role in assisting in the Underground Railroad, will be held in conjunction with Presbyterian Heritage Sunday.

"Peter and Charlotte Weaver came to Portsmouth from Kentucky in April of 1825 as freed slaves. According to historical records, they were well known in the community.... He (Peter) and Charlotte belonged to First Presbyterian Church, a church that was part of the Underground Railroad. More than likely, they helped runaway slaves traveling through the Underground Railroad."
