PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE 1-2-2011

Filled with wonder and joy that God’s gift of grace has been given in the son born for us, let us pray for the church, the good creation, and the needs of all.  (a brief silence.)   You are the radiant God of glory.  We pray that through the church your wisdom may be revealed.  Warn us when we go astray, and send us by another road to do your will.  Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

You are the guiding star of creation.  We pray that our care for the land, seas, and skies will preserve the rich variety of all that you have made.  Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

You are the light of the nations.  We pray that your abundant peace may reign in every land.  Uphold all who labor for human rights, shelter for the homeless, and protection of the vulnerable.  Hear us, O God.

Your mercy is great.

You are the hope of those in need.  We pray for all who face hardship, danger, loss, and illness.  In your compassion lift up their hearts and comfort them with your healing presence.  Hear us, O God.

ALBRIGHT UNITED METHODIST CHURCH'S LATEST NEWSLETTER

**********************************************************

During 2011, I will be preaching and teaching on the life of Jesus as seen through the eyes of Matthew. We will generally follow the lectionary readings but I will more than likely stray away occasionally from those assigned readings. I am very excited about this since Jesus is the reason for our Christian faith. What did he believe? What did he teach his followers? What did he expect them (and us) to do? We will be immersing ourselves this year in Matthew's gospel and in our Savior Jesus Christ.

January 9th this year is the traditional day to commemorate the Baptism of our Lord. On that day we will re-affirm our commitment to Christ as we remember our baptismal vows. It's a great day for baptisms, so if you've not been baptized, please pray about it and speak with me! I would love to explore with you what a commitment to Christ means.

As I write this a few days before Christmas, I am looking at a mostly blank calendar for 2011. I know it will fill up quickly. I am looking forward to all the traditions of Albright during this coming year. But I also know people are dreaming of exciting new ministries and activities. So I am also looking forward to the new things God will be doing in our midst in 2011. Virtually all of our committee chairs for 2011 are new this year! Please be in prayer for our leadership.

Here's a prayer for the new year:

God of all times and yet beyond time,

you call us into this new year still to be named.

Help us travel light in faith and expectation.

Guide us in this new venture of imagination.

Make us bold witnesses to the in-breaking of your future.

Let us rest our times in yours,

confident that we do not enter this new year alone.

(from "Chalice Worship", p. 155)

Happy New Year,

Pastor Scott

Thank you, Albright. Our Christmas Eve offering enabled us to give $301.07 to the Dearing House and $301.07 to Hope Ranch. Thank you for your generosity in all we do!

Update on video projection system for the sanctuary: As of December 29th, we have raised approximately $25,000 in cash and pledges towards the new video projectors and screens to be used in worship. Hopefully, we will have the equipment installed early in 2011. There are numerous ways we can use the video system. We welcome your ideas and input. Be watching for information about training on using the equipment and on how to volunteer to help us run the computer on Sunday mornings. Thank you, Albright, for your vision for the future of our church and for your generosity!

New Year's Prayer Vigil - We will have a prayer vigil on Friday, December 31st from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can sign up to come and pray in the chapel in 15 minute increments.

New Year's Extravaganza - The church will open at 6:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve for games & fellowship! Bring all the leftover goodies from the holidays, or your favorite soup, chili or stew in a crockpot! Bring games (dominos, cards, board games, etc.) We'll stay until midnight or until everyone falls asleep, whichever comes first! If you are interested in coming but don't want to drive after dark, we'll try to have someone pick you up in the church van.

Once again the Homemaker's Class enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Party at the home of Bob and Kay Anthony.

We took unwrapped Christmas ornaments or decorations we no longer used as dirty Santa gifts. Don Appleman brought his delicious peanut brittle that is always traded as many times as allowed.

Jim Daniel gave each of us a Kris Moose he had carved along with Santa earrings.

Good food and great fellowship was enjoyed by all.

We were delighted to have Bob and Shelly Knebel and Ken and Ila Slavin as our guest.

We ended a wonderful evening by singing Christmas carols.

The Earnest Seekers Class held their Christmas luncheon and party December 1st in the Fellowship Hall. We enjoyed playing Musical Bingo and singing Christmas Carols. Thanks to Pat Purkey for playing for us on the piano. 35 members and guests attended, and a good time was had by all.

We really appreciated all of the things the church did for Betty and the family. Betty had expressed for some time that she wanted to join Albright, and we are thankful that Pastor Scott helped her with that before she died. We thank you for the fantastic lunch and for those who participated in getting the meal provided and served. Thank you pastor for all of the visits to Betty and the comfort you gave to her and the family.

Ben DeWhitt and cousins

Thank you to the Open Door Class for sharing the wonderful Christmas carols with me Friday evening. It made the evening very special for me. Thank you for your continued prayers during my time of recovery. I see the doctor in Edmond on the 28th and hope to be in church shortly thereafter.

Thank you for the continued prayers.

Katie Goss

A big thanks to our custodian, Theo, who helps so many in and out of their cars and through the parking lot when they come to church on Sunday mornings. When we have been greeters at the back door, we have noticed how attentive he is to those in need, and we wanted to give him a special thanks for showing concern to others. He is a great asset to our church. Love, Kay and Bob Anthony

Thank you Albright family for making our Children's Program successful - from collecting boxes to being there last night. All your support is much appreciated. Special thanks to Timilyn, Scott, Royce, Chera, Jeanne, Jen, Cheryl & the muscles that helped make room for the set!! And thank you to Family Life for the Birthday Party for Jesus.

From,

Kimberley Brown

A BIG THANKS to the choir and Pat and all those involved in presenting the new Christmas cantata last Sunday. As usual, it was well done, and brought a large turnout for our morning worship. I especially appreciate our musicians all year long, and wanted to say a special thank you for the time and effort they spent in preparation for the cantata. It doesn’t “just happen”, and they all deserve a pat on the back for a job well done. Thanks again! Love, Kay Anthony

Dear Albright,

Thank you for the Christmas cards, gifts, and for the bonus given during worship on December 19. And thanks for a great 2010. It's been a great year and I am blessed to be a part of the Albright UMC. I am looking forward to what God will do through us and in us in 2011.

God bless, Pastor Scott

Thank you to Pat Purkey and the members of our choir and bell choir for their extra work this holiday season. The cantata was fantastic! Also, thanks to Kim Brown and all those who helped her with the children's Christmas program this year. It was fantastic! Hats off to the Family Life Committee for hosting the birthday party for Jesus. And a special thanks to individuals, Sunday school classes, and other groups who gave so that others could have a happier Christmas this year. We helped numerous people, some we know about and some we don't know about! Thanks, Albright!!!

Thank you Albright for the most generous gift that you gave me at Christmas. It is a pleasure to belong to such a caring church. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

Pat Purkey

Thank you so much for the Christmas bonus and the many Christmas gifts given to me. I am so grateful for them all. My children and I are very blessed to be a part of such a wonderful church family.

This day of social action and raising awareness aims to heal social ills at the national level. It supports Community Developers, United Methodist Voluntary Service (UMVS), and the  Youth Offender Rehabilitation Program. The first two programs are administered through the General Board of Global Ministries.

In The United Methodist Church calendar, Human Relations Day happens the Sunday immediately following the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. The juxtaposition of these two very special days is not a coincidence. The United Methodist Book of Discipline describes the purpose of Human Relations Day as a call to "the Church to recognize the right of all God's children in realizing their potential as human beings in relationship with each other."

The AUMW are selling “Homemade With Love” Cookbooks.  They have almost 500 recipes in them and are a great value at only $15.00  The cookbooks are available in the church office.  Get yours today!

Did you know the Upper Room (the same folks who publish the devotional magazine) has a prayer center where you can call 7 days a week?  The phone number is 1-800-251-2468.  You can also go online at http://www.upperroom.org/prayer_center/ and leave prayer requests.

READERS:  Please check the “Preaching Schedule” in the NewsNotes which go out the first of every month. Your reading will be the First Scripture Reading listed for the Sunday you are scheduled to read. Or Scott will get them to you.  In the event the NewsNotes do not reach those of you reading the first Sunday of the month, call Chera for your reading. The schedule is also posted on the bulletin board by the office. .

It is preferred that you read from the PEW Bible (New Revised Standard Version) or the large print Bible on the lectern. This way, the congregation can follow you in reading the same thing.

If you are going to be gone, please trade with someone else on the list and let Chera  know  so she can put it in the Sunday bulletin.  If an emergency or last minute change has to be made, let Donna or the office know, and we will find a reader. If, for some reason, you no longer wish to be a reader, Let Donna know .
