V HYMNS OF PRAISE “America” 697

LITANY (Red Insert) Donna Evans

Litany For Veterans Day

World War I ended on November 11, 1918, with the signing of the Armistice by the Allies and Germany. In the first Armistice Day proclamation in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson called for the nation to remember those who had died in their country’s service and to make the day an opportunity for America to “show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nation.”

Armistice Day became Veterans’ Day by an act of Congress in 1954. President Eisenhower called on the nation to remember the sacrifices of those who fought in all our nation’s wars, to celebrate the contributions of all veterans of military service, and to rededicate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace. It is Eisenhower’s call that remains the three-fold purpose of Veterans’ Day: remembering those who fought and died, celebrating all veterans, and promoting an enduring peace.

Today, we come to honor all who have served in our country, both in war and in peace. Let us give thanks to God for the land of our birth with all its chartered liberties. For all the wonder of our country’s story:

We give you thanks, O God.

For leaders in nation and state, and for those who in days past and in these present times have labored for the commonwealth:

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who in all times and places have been true and brave, and in the world’s common ways have lived upright lives and ministered to their fellows:

We give you thanks, O God.

For those who served their country in its hour of need, and especially for those who gave even their lives in that service:

We give you thanks, O God.

Let us pray. God of the ages, we thank You for all who have served in the armed forces of this country. We thank You for the freedom their sacrifice has earned and guarded for us. Help us to prize this freedom and use it well. We ask You to bless all living veterans in a special way today, as well as the families of all veterans. Comfort those who grieve for those who gave the last full measure of devotion. Strengthen those who bear physical, emotional, and spiritual wounds. Stand with those who provide care to them. Move us to reach out to sisters and brothers who are veterans, or relatives of veterans, or who currently serve in the military. We pray for the day when no one needs to serve in the military. Help us to live now in anticipation of that day, as people who long for peace, who pray for peace, and who seek to be peacemakers in this world. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen

Will the Veterans in attendance please stand.

For the family members who have made great sacrifices in order to make it possible for their service members to be on watch at home or around the world or to go into harm’s way,

We ask for your blessing.

For the families who grieve the death of a member who went in harm’s way, never to return,

We ask for your blessing.

O almighty God and most merciful Father, as we remember these your servants, remembering with gratitude their courage and strength, we hold before you those who mourn them. Look upon your bereaved servants with your mercy. As this day brings them memories of those they have lost awhile, may it also bring your consolation and the assurance that their loved ones are alive now and forever in your living presence.

Let us pray. Keep all our veterans in your care today. Grant them the peace they sought to preserve for others. As we honor our veterans, we also pray for peace. Teach all your people the ways of peace that those who have sacrificed so much for peace and freedom will not have done so in vain. We pray all these things in the name of your son, our savior, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

News Notes

A Publication for Members and Friends of Albright United Methodist Church

Volume 10, No. 11                    November 1, 2009

                     Greetings:

Your response has been excellent in our focus on Five Practices  of Fruitful Congregations.  We have many people reading the daily devotionals and the attendance at the Sunday school discussion has been outstanding.  Participation in worship has been inspiring.  November 1st we will focus on risk-taking mission and service.  On November 8th we will focus on extravagant generosity.  We hope that this emphasis has been and will continue to be a blessing to you and our congregation.

If you are unable to reach me at the church or at home, you may call my cell phone (580)763-0386.  I just want you to know that I am available for you.

I thought you might want to know where we stand on our apportionments for 2009.  As of October 23, we still have $24,467.00 to give to make 100%.  We have already given 34%.  The challenge is before us and I know we can do it and give our fair share.  Thanks to all for your faithful and generous giving to ministry through Albright UMC.

I appreciate your excellent attendance at Annual Church Conference.  We had 33 in attendance for the meal and fellowship and for the conference.  It is a joy to serve in ministry with you.

Yours in Christ,

Joe Robinson

We want to honor our Veterans on Sunday, November 8th.  Any Veteran or current member of the armed services who was not listed on the Veterans insert last year, please turn your name into the office with Branch of Service and dates of Service.  We need this information as soon as possible.  Thank You.

Have you suffered a broken bone in your hip or spine?  Do you feel as if you are getting shorter?  If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, you may want to consider being screened for the risk of osteoporosis.  We are pleased to offer a Live Line Screening preventive health event that can be used to detect just such a risk.  Life Line Screening uses a quantitative ultrasound bone densitometer, using the heel as a measurement site, to assess one’s risk of osteoporosis.  This screening compares your bone density to that of the average 20-year-old adult female, according to World Health Organization guidelines.  The osteoporosis screening is not only for women.  Of the 10 million Americans who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, 2 million are men.  Register for a Vascular with Heart Rhythm for $139, and receive the Osteoporosis test for just $10 more.  All 5 screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete.  Call 1-888-653-6441 for an appointment on November 9th.

Thanks to each of you who donated and also purchased Bake Goods for our annual event.  You always come through and the United Methodist Women will be able to help again in Mission work because of your generosity.  Thanks also, to the following members of the Bake Goods Committee for their hard work with the sale itself:  Alberta Depew, Millie Hibbert, and Deloris Robinson.  And a big thank you to Opal Brown and Pat Purkey who helped us this year (we are going to keep them) as well as Betty Covey and Marlene Wittmer who gave us a hand at first as things came in.  Zenna and Irene must be smiling!!!

Donna Evans

Bake Sale Coordinator

The Albright UMW wants to thank everyone who had a part in the Fall Salad Luncheon & Bake Sale.  It was again a great success!  We had an abundance of salads and yummy baked goods.  None of this would be possible without the whole church taking part.  I personally want to thank Donna and her crew for taking charge of the bake sale and Don and Joyce Appleman for making the “secret” chicken salad.  I cannot forget Sally Warner for taking care of all the publicity, buying the groceries, and being our treasurer.  The “worker bees” were amazing and I truly thank you for all your hard work.  Thank you to Jim Daniel for creating the three beautiful pumpkins we auctioned off.  If you would like to join the Albright United Methodist Women, please let me know.  We would be happy to have you.  The Fall Salad Luncheon & Bake Sale is only one of the projects we sponsor during the year.  We support our city as well as special projects such as Cookson Hills and Neighborhood Services Organization.  Again, a big thank you to all!

Lynnita Miller

I wish to thank my church family for all their prayers, cards, phone calls, and visits during my recent hospital stay and rehab.  What a blessing to have such a wonderful family!  You are the best!  God bless.

Lila Armstrong

A word of thanks to our thoughtful custodian, Theo, who has been opening the door and handing out bulletins before Sunday School at the back door (elevator entrance).  He has a smile on his face, and has been a most welcome sight since he started volunteering for this duty and I have heard many say how much they appreciated it!  Thanks so much, Theo!
