Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren
Continuing the work of Jesus Peacefully, Simply, Together

Our Heritage

The Church of the Brethren: The Church of the Brethren roots are in anabaptist and pietist movements of 18th centrury Germany. There, led by Alexander Mack, eight beleievers were baptized in the tiny Eder River near Schwarzenau. Eventually, efforts to put the New Testament teachings into practice led to the church seeking religious freedom in the New World. The first church was organized in 1793 in Germantown, a suburb of Philadelphia. The church has since spread across the United States, with missions in Nigeria, the Sudan and Ecuador. We share belief in the classic doctrines of the Christian faith, but hold that the New Testament is our creed. We are one of the historic peace churches and view as partners other denominations serving Christ as Lord. The church sponsors six colleges and a theological seminary. Our headquarters are in Elgin, Illinois.

Mechanic Grove Church: In 1896, Elder George Bucher bought a farm at Mechanic Grove and held services in his home and homes of several members. The congregation was organized in 1897 with 34 charter members. Two meetinghouses were secured in 1898, one was purchased and one constructed; the later building was enlarged in 1928. A new church building was dedicated in 1959. A chapel, carport, pastors' studies and office were added in 1976. Our newest addition including a new sanctuary, kitchen, Family Life Center and offices was dedicated in October of 2000. There were also some youth and young adult rooms in the addition. The old educational wing and sanctuary were remodeled for the adult and children's classrooms.
