Newry Lutheran Church

WELCA

WELCA (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) is a group of women from our church who meet monthly to study, fellowship, and do projects that benefit our church, our community, and enrich our relationship with God as we work together throughout the year. Every woman of the church is a part of WELCA and is welcome to participate in any of WELCA's programs. Some of the projects we do are bi-monthly visits to the shut-ins of the church, sewing together and knotting quilts for different agencies in the area such as American Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, and Domestic Abuse Center, filling Christmas stockings for nursing homes, providing Thanksgiving fruit baskets for shut-ins, and serving funeral meals. Our WELCA group here at Newry Lutheran meets on the second Monday of the month, September through May, with a tasty dessert made by one of the members. This is followed by our topic of the month and business meeting. We have fun and fellowship while working and learning and with God's help we will continue to do this to the glory of His Name.

LADIES OF THE CLOTH

Ladies of the Cloth is a group devoted to the creation of knotted comforters. These comforters are donated to the Hollidaysburg Rescue Workers, the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Children and Youth Services, Camp Sequanota, and Lutheran World Relief. Much work, such as cutting patches, sewing, pressing and knotting is done at home. The women meet at the church weekly beginning with the second Tuesday in September to assemble a back, middle, and top from donated material for each comforter which is then sewn together. Meeting weekly on Tuesdays from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, through the end of April, the group has consistently made over 100 comforters per sewing year. Anyone may join in and help. Come when you can or volunteer to do some work at home.
