Former Members of East Liberty Presbyterian Church

Below are links to family histories of former members of the church.
Please email us if you know of a link you'd like to suggest.

Catherine (Minerd) Barnhouse (1824-1876) and Harrison Barnhouse (1829-1875) - Shortly after their marriage, the Barnhouses moved to Normalville, and later to East Liberty, where Harrison worked in the coke ovens.  Both were active members of East Liberty Presbyterian Church, where Harrison was elected Superintendent of the Sunday School in 1871.  He and daughter Esther were also delegates to the 8th Annual Convention in 1874.

William Marcy Barnhouse (1856-1874) - Son of Catherine (Minerd) Barnhouse and Harrison Barnhouse.  William was a much-loved member of East Liberty Presbyterian Church's Sunday School.  Tragically, he died at the age of 18.  William is buried in the church's graveyard.

Wallace H. & Dora Beeson - Wallace Beeson was the great-grandson of Jacob Beeson, one of the co-founders of Uniontown (formerly Beesontown).  Wallace and Dora are listed in the 1916 Register of Members. Daughters Jessie Brady and Ruth McCune and sons Wallace Beeson and Edgar Beeson were all members of East Liberty Presbyterian Church.  Some of their grandchildren are also lifelong members, including current church secretary Elaine Cumberland.  Other family members connected with the church at one time or another include Ruth Fleming, Mary Jacobs, and William Beeson.  An extensive genaology of the Beeson family can also be found here.

Esther R. (Barnhouse) Freed (1852-1922) - Born near Normalville PA, married to Christian Stoner Freed. Both were lifelong members of East Liberty Presbyterian Church, and Esther taught Sunday School here for a record-breaking 50 years.  Follow this link to see family photos and much more!

Mary Belle Garbart (1897-1994) - Former schoolteacher and long-time member of East Liberty Presbyterian Church.  Follow this link to read her obituary.

Ralph Livengood (1912-1999) - Former P&LE railroad employee and 53-year member of East Liberty Presbyterian Church.  Scroll about halfway down the linked page of Leibenguth family members to read his obituary.

Elizabeth (Galley) Oglevee (1807-1859) - Married to Jesse Oglevee and mother of Joseph Oglevee (see below).

Jesse Oglevee (1804-1876), Farrington Oglevee (1808-1899), Joseph Oglevee (1827-1915), and many other generations of the Oglevee family are listed on the above link.  All three of these men served as ruling elders of the church.  Jesse Oglevee is buried in the church's graveyard, as are Joseph (d. 1855) & Ann (d. 1845) Oglevee (presumably Jesse's parents?)

Joseph Oglevee and Rebecca (Stoner) Oglevee (1828-1908) were married at our church.  In addition to being a ruling elder, Joseph also wrote the church's first history and may have been the author of the Oglevee Memoirs.  Additional information on them and their family can be found on the above two links.

Martha Stoner (1829-1894) - Wife of John Stoner and mother of Jesse Stoner, who married Susan (Barnhouse) Stoner presumably at East Liberty Presbyterian Church.  Martha is mentioned in the Minerd/Barnhouse family pages and is buried in the church's graveyard.

Clara Jane Freed Thorpe (1876-1973) and Edwin Thomas Thorpe (1874-1964) - Clara was the eldest child of Christian and Esther Freed (see above), born near Connellsville.  Edwin was born and raised in Liberty, PA, where he owned a grocery store for a time. The two met at East Liberty Presbyterian Church and were longtime members.  Follow their link to a delightful, detailed description of Vanderbilt life in the late 1800's and early-to-mid 1900's, along with many family and homestead photos.

Jacob and Mary (Stauffer) Varnes - parents of Margaret (Varnes) Leighty, wife of founding member Henry Leighty.  The site also includes information on the following church-related surnames: Leighty, Sechrist, Boyer, Oglevee, Strickler, Hair, Shafer, Stauffer, Work, Wellington, and Snyder.   Click the Varnes name above to view the site.  The password for entry is: thirteen (the number of Jacob & Mary's children).
