While researching this site, we
discovered that the church's records for the graveyard had been
lost. After asking around, long-time members of the church recalled
this story:
C.C. Collins formerly owned the lumber yard in
Vanderbilt. Mr. Collins was secretary for the Dickerson Run Cemetery
Board and had all information about people buried there, etc. in the
company's safe. He was also a member of East Liberty Presbyterian
Church and presumably had the cemetery information for the church cemetery
in the safe, too.
The safe was stolen from the office of the lumber
mill one night and the contents were never returned. According to
people who recall the evening, it was a quiet moon lit night and yet no
one heard a noise!
If anyone reading these pages should come across any
old church records from East Liberty (or Cumberland) Presbyterian Church
of Vanderbilt at local garage sales, flea markets, or buried in an old
attic somewhere (or if you find the old mill safe!) please let
us know!
