So, you are asking yourself ...
What is Vacation Bible School?
Well...pull up a chair and lend a ear and I will tell you all about it!
VBS, as we call it here at DFUMC is one of the best times of the year for us.
Held at the end of July each year from 9:00am -12:00pm, VBS ministers to children in grades Pre-school through 6th.
We begin to plan VBS during the winter between January and February. Why so early you ask? First we need to choose a theme for our program. Each year the theme is different for the children. During VBS we transform our church to bring that theme to life for the entire week. We as a church all help bring the stories taken from the Bible to life the best way we can.
You see the stories are not just stories that someone wrote down, but true events that took place. Just picture it in your mind for a moment. You walk through the church doors and step back in time, to the time when Jesus walked the earth performing miracles like healing a blind man, and raising a child from the dead.
Or perhaps, you step further back in time when Jonah was inside the belly of a whale, or God was giving Moses the ten commandments. Adult members of our church will even dress as someone from Bibical times so the children can have a better understanding of these events that actually took place.
The children who take part in our VBS all come to find out that God loves everyone no matter what they have ever done, or what they have not done. God's love is forever.
The children also learn that God does not take a vacation. He is always ready to listen to us. God watches over us and he loves us just as we are.
Children learn the messages and love of God through music, games, crafts, lessons and skits. At the end of the week the families are invited to witness the final program and participate in our cookout and picnic.
During this week the children bring in items which are donated to our local food pantries. They also bring in coin change which gets counted & rolled by volunteers and is then used for several outreach ministries globally and locally.
VBS 2010 made blankets that went to Children and Youth and Safe Haven, two programs that serve Pike County. In other years, VBS made cards for service men and women overseas. Our children have also learned to serve one another as well as love one another, just as God does love and serve us. God sent his most precious son Jesus Christ into the world to minister to us, set examples for us and die for all of our sins. This proves God's love for us. This is the love children see and learn while participating in VBS at DFUMC.
