Tonia Petty literally spent her initial years of life on a seminary campus since her father was attending school for the ministry. She comes from a line of ministers, so ministry has been ingrained in the very fabric of her life. From a young age, she was active in her youth group and frequently invited friends to attend. While in high school, she proactively organized a Bible study at her school. In college, she took on more leadership roles facilitating Bible studies and organizing young adult fellowship activities for a campus ministry. Tonia continued in this role throughout graduate school and while she was working in education. After she completed her education at Howard University, she went on to obtain a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration at Geneva College because of her interest in campus ministry and student enrichment. She worked for several years in education, social services, and speech therapy when she determined that to fully serve people she would need to attend seminary. Andover Newton’s commitment to social justice and pastoral care has enriched her spiritually. A defining moment in her seminary experience was the opportunity to visit South Korea through the Boston Theological Institute (BTI), the consortium of theology schools in Boston. Tonia represented Andover Newton in this trip that included students and professors from various BTI colleges and universities.
